PLEASE STATE YOUR NAME One of the student learning outcomes for this course is: “Students will cultivate the ability to successfully engage in group problem solving through cooperation and a shared responsibility and mutual respect for both difference and sameness in their respective artistic and scientific disciplines/culture”. Please reflect on how you experience(d) the group process you participated in.

I enjoyed this project a lot. I thought that the collaboration between science and art was something so interesting but something I had never really though of as a course I would be taking. When I found out about it I was excited, because I am a science major and dance minor so I though this would be a cool opportunity to mix my two disciplines. The collaboration started off with a communication barrier and although I was familiar with some of the science terms I study body structures as opposed to like chemistry based science. The use of imagery and figurative language really helped us understand our science counterparts and I think visual aid, was crucial for them. Showing what we mean so they can see it rather than trying to explain it. Overall I think it was a very unique experience and in the future I would love to take something like a muscle contraction and use the science behind that to make a piece.

I never experienced a moment where we were not able to solve a problem together and we didn't disrespect each others' disciplines. We had a few areas where our communication was a challenge initially but by the second and third meetings we had little to no issues communicating. From then on, we were able to design our dance with ease since we knew how to explain ideas to one another and knew more about what we needed to do to complete our project.

I would say that my group for this collaboration was very proactive and we all reached out to each other for clear communication. I appreciated my groupmates' willingness to create something together, especially because I had just met about half of them this semester. It wasn't too challenging because I feel that we were fairly productive and understood that we all wanted to put a good effort into this project. There were a couple times that we found ourselves stumped on a small issue, but we helped each other get out of it. Our group was very open to each others' input, keeping our original tasks in mind.

I would say at the start we clearly had our differences. At the start, the physics students explained some topics to the dancers and the dancers were giving input on how we could make a dance routine from the topics. The scientists, (myself included) were trying to map out an entire routine and work on every little meaning, but then the dancers had us start moving around because we were just standing still.
We started from some simple movements and tried a bunch of different ideas until we built a routine right there, in-person, through physically doing what we were explaining. This was clearly a better approach to coming up with a routine, and from there we quickly snowballed off of our movements and had the general idea from start to finish of our dance, the rest was just getting our coordination in sync and ironing out some small features. The dancers were very helpful in recognizing that we were not exactly fluent with our body movements, and did an excellent job guiding the choreography towards group dynamics, rather than individual dancing skills (that us physics students were clearly lacking haha). Together we were able to see what our strengths and weaknesses were, and as a team we naturally set a common understanding from the initial footing.

This project definitely helped me develop problem solving skills and well as showed to have respect towards other people person and situations. We also did the same for the science students when it came to the dance part. They were very helpful when creating the dance so we could make it as accurate as possible. If we were doing something that wasn't following the life of a polymer they would give other ideas to further help us. Overall I think we had a very good group and we all worked really well together.

I felt at first we were sort of divided into the science and dance people due to our knowledge of our respected fields and as the scientist become more comfortable with the movements and the dancers with the scientific concepts it became easier to understand each other and were able to develop more sophisticated ideas for our proposal that would not have been possible if there was no collaboration. While it was difficult to meet up as the dancer has vary different schedules that the scientist but we managed to come up with a proposal we all liked and felt comfortable preforming. Overall I think the clash of the two very different disciplines made a hump both groups needed to get over before synergy could begin to be established.

But, as we got put into a group, I found it hard to communicate with the physic students. The first couple of meetings with the physic students, we as dancers, did most of the talking & it was like we were trying to get them to talk so that it wouldn't feel one-sided. I wish it wouldn't be such a negative communication throughout the whole process but on the positive side, it was such an interesting project and to be able to go outside of my box, thinking of physics way of dancing.

Speaking from a Dancers perspective, I learn most effectively and efficiently through movement and physical and visual learning. Thus, embodying the scientific concepts did help me understand them better especially working with the physics department and my dance major department all at the same time in a group setting.

This collaboration was a bit challenging at first because our group started off feeling very segregated by majors and there was a barrier of shared language to get each our ideas on the table. This created the problem of not being able to actually collaborate, it was more of a this side and that side. After a little but of frustration because of this barrier we were able to water down what we were each trying to explain and found more of a common ground and then we were able to start making our dance based off of our more shared knowledge of the given ideas. Overall it was a success in being able to problem solve and work around our language barriers and improve our team work skills.
