She was then marched to Auschwitz. There she survived testing by the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. She was 21 when she was herded into the gas chamber, naked. She came out alive.  Turgel didn't know the Nazis had tried to kill her until a woman she knew told her she was in the gas chamber. Turgel was then sent to Buchenwald, and then Belsen.
