Sequent occupance is the act of one group moving in and displacing the current group settlers. In Harlem, this "pioneer settlers" were Jewish, but in the late 1800s/early 1900s black residents took over the once Jewish filled streets. Many other parts of New York are examples of a sequent occupance. The cycle will never stop.

For instance, the region of Harlem used to be a Jewish community, but over time, different ethnicities, including African Americans and Puerto Ricans, moved there. As a result parts of it became known as "hoods," where crime occurs more frequently than in the higher income parts of Harlem or New York City in general.

Sequent occupance has occured in Harlem by the occupants of Harlem from the early 1800s to early 1900s being prodominantly jewish but with black citizens moving into the area slowly. By the 1920s, the Jewish population began moving elsewhere, while Latin American families moved in along side other black families and Harlem experienced a renaissance. What was once an upscale portion of New York quickly became a ghetto with lower income families moving in. This shows sequent occupance change over time.

In the article, it states "After the 1920s, most Jewish families moved away from Harlem and the area became mostly home to New York City’s black population."
