Cia Goes to the Testing Facility

Cia makes her way to the testing facility with some of her friends, most importantly Tomas. She notices cameras inside the skimmer. During a break outside, Cia and Tomas exchange information about her father's nightmares.

Cia Meets Ryme

Cia Starts the 1st Test

Ryme is Found Dead

Cia Passes the First Test

Cia Starts the 2nd Test

Cia is called into a group of 6 with Malachi and Will and is given a puzzle box to solve. Cia opens it and has to differentiate between edible and inedible plants. They then have to eat the plants put in edible. After that they have to fix a pulse radio. Cia does so, but Malachi starts shaking. He touches a box he wasn't supposed to, and it explodes and a nail flies into his eye. He falls to the floor and bleeds out. Malachi is dead.

Cia Passes the 2nd Test

Cia and most of her friends pass the second test. Malachi and Boyd died during it.

Cia Starts the 3rd Test

Cia starts the 3rd test, a group one. There are 5 doors with 5 questions for each. Only one person can do questions at a time. If you try to reattempt questions, you will be penalized. Cia and her group answered example questions to get everyone's strengths. Halfway into the 3rd test, Cia looks at one of her teammate's notebooks and realizes that he had tried to sabotage the entire team by doing all 5 questions. Cia tells her remaining teammate and walks through the door. She does not answer any questions and walks right through. Once she got back to the cafeteria, she notices that she was right.

Cia Passes the 3rd Test

Cia Starts the 4th Test

Cia is placed hundreds of miles away from the testing facility and is tasked to make her way back through the wastelands of what is left after the war. She was given 3 items to take with her and chose a handgun, first aid kit, and a water purification kit. She and Tomas arranged to meet up at the tallest building, so she looks for it.

Tomas Finds Cia

While Cia is looking for the tallest building, she crosses over an unstable bridge and almost falls into the river. Thankfully, Tomas grabs her arms before she falls. This is how they meet up.

Cia and Tomas Travel Through the Wasteland

Cia and Tomas make their way toward Tosu City, only stopping for the night or to get water. Eventually they find two bicycles, and work to repair them. They also go to a road where peddling will be a lot easier.

Cia and Tomas Find Will

Cia Meets a Rebel

Cia Has an Encounter With Mutated Humans

While searching for water away from Tomas and Will, she encounters a group of mutated humans and has to injure and kill them. She gets a wound on her arm that could get infected. (It will)

Cia Gets Back to Tomas and Will

Cia finds Tomas and Will and, when Cia was away, they got into a small fight. They also encountered another candidate. Will says they just left the candidate behind them but Cia senses they were lying. Tomas is acting suspicious. After this, Will decides to leave them and travel on his own.

Cia Encounters the Rebel Again

Cia sees the rebel again and rushes to the fence. They chat, and the man knows a lot about Cia and her family. He throws her another bag with food and water, and a vial of liquid. She is instructed to drink it the morning of the interview to help her family keep their secrets.

Cia and Tomas Meet a Group of Mutated Humans

While they were walking through a city, Cia notices a mutated human watching them, then she notices another, and another, until there are dozens of them. They continue walking, and the mutated humans slowly follow, increasing the gap between the two parties. Then, gunfire starts mowing down the watchers, it was coming from a machine gun atop a 3-story building. The person firing-Brick. The watchers get shot down dozens at a time, and more keep coming, not attacking, just trying to care for the dead. Cia and Tomas bike away to an abandoned structure to sleep. Cia's nightmares are filled with gore and rivers of blood. This is a moment she will not forget.

Cia's Arm Gets Worse

Cia's arm has an infection and is really bad. She thinks back to a time when her childhood doctor did something to fix a situation like this. Cia does the operation and it hurts like nothing she's experienced before. Excruciating pain rockets throughout her body. Eventually, she is done, the infection will not affect her as much now. She can continue biking.

Roman Attacks Cia and Tomas

When Cia wakes up, she realizes there is someone outside from where she is sleeping. She wakes up Tomas and they watch outside until it looks like he has passed them. She then says "I think we are safe" then Roman swings his knife, narrowly missing Cia. Tomas tackles Roman to the ground and they fight. Cia scrambles to get her gun and take aim, but she isn't fast enough.

Will Saves Cia and Tomas

A gun fires and Roman falls to the ground, dead. Tomas is glad Cia shot in time, but Cia wasn't the one who fired. Will steps out and Cia thanks him a ton. Cia tends to Tomas's wound.

They Encounter Another Contestant

While biking, Cia notices a glint of metal and swerves, her wheel breaks and she falls to the ground, she hears gunfire and spins around with her gun and takes aim. She fires and her shot lands. The Contestant flees in a skimmer. Cia looks at the wheel and decides that it is broken and she cannot use the bike anymore.

Will Betrays Them

Right before Will tries to leave, he takes a shot at Tomas and unfortunately connects, even though Cia pushes him to the side. Cia takes aim with her gun but Will says she doesn't have the bravery to shoot him. He takes a shot at Cia right when Cia takes a shot at him Cia's bullet connects but Will's does not. Will runs back to his skimmer, Cia lands another shot. Will barely has enough time to fly off into the distance.

Cia Decides Tomas Can't Walk and Creates a Cart

Cia makes a cart for Tomas to ride on behind one of the bikes. They continue their journey to the finish line. It is uneventful, and they ride slowly to the finish line until there are less than 50 feet in between them and the finish line, they fall off the bike, and Cia slowly drags Tomas over the line. They have passed the 4th Test.

Cia Goes to the Interview

After she passes the 4th test, she is rushed to medical attention and her arm is healed up. Tomas tries to find a way to counteract the memory loss with a pill, he sneaks two of them but does not give it to Cia in time. Cia decides to drink the liquid inside the vial before her interview. She answered all the questions easily. At the end, she asked about her friend Zandri, and how she died. The Testing officials thought Cia already knew how. They also give the information that she had her bracelet in Cia's testing bag. This information leaves Cia devastated, because she knows that Tomas was the one who killed her. It takes days for the officials to decide her fate, and during this time, she stares into the camera in her room, takes off her bracelet, and goes into the restroom where no one is watching or listening to her.

Cia Records Messages

When fumbling around with Zeen's transit recorder, she finds a small button on the back that plays back her brothers recording on it. She realizes she can record messages on it for herself after her memory is wiped. There is a limited amount of storage on the device so she has to only record the most important parts.

Cia Gets Her Results

Cia is escorted to a room with many testing officials seated at a long table. One of the higher ranked officials have a white envelope in his hand. He slowly walks over to Cia, opens the envelope, and gives it to her.

Cia Passes The Testing

Cia Loses Her Memory

The story cuts to Cia in her University student quarters without her memory of the Testing. She goes to her birthday party, and Micheal gives her her stuff from the Testing back, including her transit communicator.

Cia Listens to Herself During The Testing

Cia is fumbling around with the transit communicator, when she hits the button on the back, playing her messages to herself, telling tales of the atrocities that had happened during the testing. The book ends.
