This was a great start to my picture book immersion. The book follows a bird (Bob) and a bat (Bat) that like to paint together, but when Bat leaves suddenly, Bob can only paint blue images. Bob's other friends rally together to bring other colors back into his life. This would be a great book to discuss emotional expression with children, both in art and in needing alone time (as Bat does). The illustrations are lovely and could be the basis of several crafts, such as thumbprint art as this style is used on some of the pages.

A grandfather and his grandchildren walk and notice the plants and animals outside rushing around. They then sit still, and watch as much of nature does the same. This would be a great book to connect with any environmental programs, or simply an outdoor reading experience. A short, guided meditation may work for older kids. For kids who may struggle with sitting still, they could quietly explore a garden and take pictures of what they find.

Rain Fish would be a great read for younger children with it's sing-song rhyming scheme and bright visuals. The "rain fish" are made up of trash and random doodads that rise up when the rain comes. This could segway into discussions on recycling and pollution, as well as an upcycling activity for kids to make their own rain fish. The narrative is action heavy, so the book also lends itself to being performed.

This is a heavier book, covering the true story of someone imprisoned in Minidoka, one of the incarceration camps created for Japanese-Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be a great book to tie into a history lesson on that subject. The book is a love story at it's heart, and it shows the resilience of those who survived in the camps without brushing aside the unfairness of the conditions they were living under. An author's note at the end of the book discusses the the people (her grandparents) and events that inspired the story, which would help the librarian begin the discussion.

This is a fun book that would tie in well with any kind of aquatic theming or programming. It follows Inky the octopus as he dreams about, and then succeeds in, escaping his tank for the ocean. This book is also based on a true story, which is covered at the back of the book alongside several other stories about the hijinks of other real octopuses. there are great videos online showing the many things the octopus can do, serving as a visual compliment to the book. I've included a couple below.

Another set of creative and bright illustrations. This book follows a mole who wants to go outside of his hole, but gets too scared every time he tries. When he is finally forced out, he admires the colorful world. Color is a huge component of this book, contrasting the black and white world the mole lives in underground with the many colors above, and this would go well with a unit on colors.

This is a lush and funny re-telling of the Cinderella story. I imagine kids will get a kick out of this version starring chickens. The story and art draw inspiration from Russian culture, and this book could lead into the many different cultural versions of Cinderella. It also features many accurate depictions of different chicken breeds, as well as other birds, so there could be a scientific lesson attached as well.

This book covers the life story of Williamina Stevens Fleming, a 19th century astronomer and the first woman to hold an official title at Harvard. There is a lot of astronomy jargon, but context clues through the beautiful art and a glossary help alleviate potential troubles there. This could tie into lessons on space of course, but also photography and feminism.

This is a surreal fairy tale about a young girl (Ida) rescuing her baby sister from goblins after she was kidnapped while Ida was playing her horn. This story will likely speak to any children who recently became older siblings and are having to face new responsibility in their household and any related fears and worries. Some may hesitate to choose this book to read as it is on the darker side, but it has a happy ending and I think it is important not to shelter children too much from chaos and darkness as these are things they already face as human beings.
