That's 223.4 million people" (para. 2). Trauma occurs when an individual is exposed to a deeply distressing or life-altering event that leads to overwhelming and uncontrollable feelings of helplessness, sadness, fear, and isolation. A single life-altering event can have varying levels of impact on an individual sometimes making it difficult to recognize and appropriately respond through support services. Past traumas left untreated can develop into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) wherein negative feelings and thoughts resurface through exposure to new traumatic events.

My name is Ashleigh Bennett, a former k-12 Teacher and school Counselor of 14 years and current Community College Professor and Girls' Home Owner/Director. I am married(for 10 years), with two little ones. My little girl is 7 and my little boy just turned one last Friday! I absolutely LOVE family, they are everything to me and keep me very very busy.

I am also on the LPC track, which I believe will open doors to great understanding and opportunity within my current role. I also have a business idea that came about after facing my own traumatic situation. 

  • My goal for this course is to gain an understanding of trauma and various ways to deal/cope with it depending on personality.
  • My biggest takeaway was the startling fact that 1 in every 5 adults has a mental health concern. That is extremely alarming... unbelievable actually. 

  • After reviewing the quiz results, I am reminded of my own personal encounter with trauma. Even though in the midst it doesn't feel like it, I have a clear understanding that I was not the only one going through trauma, life is full of twists and turns for all of us. Which way we turn and how we choose to deal with the twist is what ultimately matters. I was blown away at the number of affected individuals, however, it's still not a surprise... depression is real.   

  • In my current role as a Girls' Home Owner/Director, it would be extremely beneficial to understand various behavioral theories and best practices for dealing with trauma. Fostered youth, as well as youth in general are statistically proven to have difficulty with navigating life through traumatic circumstances.  

  • There is a particular site that I have enjoyed visiting for a greater understanding of mental health interventions for children in foster care since they have a higher risk of mental health trauma. Pubmed's website address is Mental Health Interventions for Children in Foster Care: A Systematic Review - PubMed (nih.gov). Although it was published in 2016 there is still so much relevant and helpful information.  

  • Learning about and understanding mental health is a necessity nowadays. The effects of Covid affected society as a whole immensely from a broad array of ages. People are still hurting and/or dealing with the traumatic effects whether it was financial, social, occupational, etc. On top of this extreme epidemic, life did not stop, so personal situations were still occurring while in the midst of this trauma. I have heard all my life to pray about all things, now I do believe we are to always pray as scripture states, but we also have to seek an understanding of the practical spectrum of things to understand what strategy to use.
