The grade levels within my group I would like to work with are k-6; as a future school counselor, I would like to work with these grade levels because, in elementary school, students begin to develop academically, and students start to evolve in their decision-making skills. Students are also able to communicate their needs. I believe it is vital at an early age to be a part of a child’s development which involves learning strategies and social skills that are essential to their success as they move forward with their education. It is also vital to help students succeed by working with diverse students by executing school counseling programs crucial to their development.

School Counselor roles
The roles I would enjoy performing when working with elementary-level students are scheduling and delivering school counseling curriculum classes in consultation with teachers based on developmental needs and needs discovered through data, offering students counseling in small groups and for a brief time, and identifying and resolving difficulties, conditions, and problems with students by consulting the school's principal Whichever grade level you choose to work with as a school counselor it is critical to have a relationship with staff members of the school to help students develop academically and mentally.

My results on the School Counselor Competency Assessment indicated various areas that still require improvement, which is to be expected given my still-limited knowledge of the subject. However, it’s a good start that I understand and agree with all viewpoints and consider myself culturally aware. In addition, while completing the school counselor competency assessment, I realized one of my weakest links was under direct and indirect student services.


B-SS 2. Provide appraisal and advisement in large-group, classroom, small-group, and individual settings


As a school counselor, you need to be involved in creating plans for assessing student progress and counseling families on achieving the ASCA Student Standards by evaluating students' abilities, values, and job interests to help them better understand themselves. Students can develop short- and long-term goals with the assistance of professional prospects, labor market developments, and economics. It all seems overwhelming, and it is normal to feel this way due to my limited knowledge of methods and theories at this stage. However, I can improve in this area by researching, for example, making sure I am familiar with the proper assessments to use and knowing what agencies are in my area to have a relationship with to help my students. Then, as I continue this program, I will feel more comfortable and improve my results.

The area that I did well in was the professional foundation. B-PF 8. Demonstrate advocacy for a school counseling program. Supporting students' intellectual, social, and psychological needs is a component of advocacy. Student counselors help students discover their skills and areas of interest.  Advocacy involving school counselors proves that all parties concerned understand the school counselor’s role and the need to implement a school counseling program to benefit the students. School counselors must establish relationships with key parties and explain how various programs can affect student achievement. Look into the counseling options at your school, making a connection between what your stakeholders want and need and the supports and services your school counseling program can offer.


As I move through this program, I plan to return to the assessment to see what areas I should concentrate on as I gain knowledge and experience. No matter how many places I feel competent in, I always work to develop and improve my skills.
