The lead singer of Papa Roach, Jacoby Shaddix, explains that "we're at a fever pitch of confusion, smoke and mirrors, blatant lies. The American Dream is on the chopping block." This means that America is struggling and is hurt. "We're trying to see through the smoke in our eyes" is a metaphor and it means that the American Dream is not giving people the same edge at "making it" that other people have while actually "making it." She got a short offer, and the bank turned her down. The month after they took her house the bank accepted a foreclosure offer for almost the same price as Bonnie's.
