My American Dream would be living in a nice home in Bellingham, Washington. I would also want a wife, one boy, and a golden retriever. Owning my dream car and traveling to European countries are on my list for my American Dream. A good job is a must have if I want to achieve this dream.

The song "American Dreams" by Papa Roach is about "struggling America." My theme of choice is the American Dream is dying and this represents the song pretty well because of the blatant lies being told by the system. The meaning of "another family that's struggling to keep sane cause their neighborhood ain't a safe place" is how the people who can't afford their American Dream live in neighborhoods that are dangerous and violent. The lead singer of Papa Roach, Jacoby Shaddix, explains that "we're at a fever pitch of confusion, smoke and mirrors, blatant lies. The American Dream is on the chopping block." This means that America is struggling and is hurt. "We're trying to see through the smoke in our eyes" is a metaphor and it means that the American Dream is not giving people the same edge at "making it" that other people have while actually "making it." "We're trying to keep ourselves alive but it's hard to get by when it feels like something's wrong here" means that it is difficult to get somewhere when you feel like you're getting nowhere.

What is the American Dream?

The American Dream is the ideology of opportunities and equality. The first person who coined the phrase "The American Dream" was James Truslow Adams in 1931. He claimed, "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone...." This means that everyone should have the right to have an American Dream. My understanding of the American Dream is someone who dreams of having a wife, some kids, and pets. It also includes a house with a white picket fence and a lot of land. Many people's dreams are to have money. Money is going to make their dreams a reality.

The theme of the American Dream is dying fits well with the book Of Mice and Men. In the book, it states, "coulda been in the movies, an' had nice clothes." Curley's wife's dream was to be in the movies and make it big. She is very lonely, so she talks and flirts with the other men on the ranch. The meaning of "I never got the letter" is that Curley's wife thinks that her "ol' lady" stole it from her and so she married Curley. Steinbeck, the author of the book, Of Mice and Men, reveals that George and Lennie's American Dream was to own a house with animals such as chickens, pigs, cows, and rabbits, and "live off the fad of the land."

"The term American Dream refers to the things in life that I hoped and wanted to accomplish. I planned to become a Radiology Technologist. I pursued it but unfortunately didn't have all of my schooling which I regret. I always wanted to have a good job, husband, children, and to be a homeowner. I always wanted to travel to different states. My parents influenced me. They struggled at times, but they always managed. My American Dream has and hasn't come true. I am married and had my children. We finally own a home. It has been a struggle to make ends meet. It is very expensive in California. It depends on what the person's American Dream is. Anything is possibly if they work hard and set their minds to it. I do think it is still a "land of opportunity" to a certain point. It depends on what state you live in. It is too expensive for the average person to live in California. My parents always told me to pay my bills on time. They explained credit scores and how they work on trying to buy a car or house. I instill that advice onto my children also. I think you can achieve anything you set your mind to as long as the dream is realistic and achievable."

The women in the video clip, Bonnie, lost two of her houses and her job due to a mortgage crisis. Both of her houses were worth one million dollars each. They were also a $10k monthly payment. She had four dogs, some sheep, chickens, and roosters. She got a short offer, and the bank turned her down. The month after they took her house the bank accepted a foreclosure offer for almost the same price as Bonnie's. Bonnie had to keep her car overnight at the mechanic, but she had to tell the guy that he can't keep her car overnight because she lives in it.

People can't get ahead in life financially. This is because of the increased inflation in today's society. Student debt is also destroying a generation of non-wealthy Americans because of high prices. Medical care is unaffordable even with health insurance. Lots of people need a job to be able to have medical care. Americans can't have a secure retirement. People will have to keep working to be able to do things they want to.
