Malaysian air forces are descended from Royal Air Force (RAF) Malayan Auxiliary Air Force units founded in 1934. The Straits Settlements Volunteer Air Force (SSVAF) and the Straits Settlements Volunteer Air Force grew out of the Malayan Volunteers Air Force (MVAF), which was formed in 1940 and disbanded in 1942 during the Japanese invasion of Malaya (SSVAF). This subsequent organisation, resurrected just in time for the Malayan Emergency in 1950, greatly aided the war effort.

The Royal Federation of Malaya Air Force (RFMAF), a designation bestowed by Parliament in recognition of the MVAF's contributions to national defence during the Emergency and the country's transition to independence, was established on June 2, 1958, and RMAF Day is observed annually.

Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia, or "Royal Malaysian Air Force," became the name of the air force with the creation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963. The Handley Page Herald transport and the De Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou were two brand-new models that entered service. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the RMAF acquired Sikorsky S-61A-4 helicopters for service in the transport capacity. 10 ex-Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) CAC Sabre aircraft were donated to the RMAF, giving it an air defence capability.

Having a air force aircraft is crucial for a nation's military capabilities and defense. Air force aircraft provide a wide range of capabilities such as air superiority, strategic bombing, intelligence gathering, mobility, and air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities. They also have important roles in humanitarian aid and disaster relief, airborne early warning and control, and command and control. Without an air force, a nation would be at a significant disadvantage in the event of war and would have limited ability to respond to potential threats and defend its airspace. Additionally, air force aircraft can also serve as a powerful deterrent to potential aggressors and provide psychological warfare capabilities. Overall, the advantages of having a air force aircraft far outweigh the disadvantages of not having one.
