Some of the iron shavings are sticking up the closer that it is to the magnet, but as it gets farther they don't stick up as much, and are stagnant.

it out lines the round magnet, the magnetic field isnt that far. When all of the shavings are clumped up it looks like a ball. When it is spread out it is hard to spread away from the magnet.

The closer that it is to the magnet, it sticks up, but the farther away it is, it settles down and doesn't stick up, and when you touch it, it feels resistant to leaving the magnet.
