France persuaded Spain for the land from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains. France offered to sell the land to the United States. The United States bought the land for $15 million dollars and sent Lewis and Clark to explore the newly doubled United States.

Meriwether Lewis was chosen by Tomas Jefferson to explore the Louisiana purchase because he was his personal secretary he was a intelligent and literate man.Lewis chose William Clark to join him in his journey, Clark was a draftsman and a frontiersman

The main goal was to find a water route linking the columbia and missouri rivers, the water link would create a connection between the Pacific Ocean with the Mississippi River creating a connection to the western states.

The Missouri Compromise, which occurred in 1820, divided the Louisiana territory into free states and slave states and paved the way for further conflicts between the North and the South.
