On December 20th, 1860, Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina was occupied by Union troops. The Confederates set up forces surrounding the fort to surrender the Union forces. however the Union troops were waiting on a supply ship and refused to surrender. However, the Confederates prevented the ship, "Star of the West,¨ from supplying the Union troops. Without the supplies, the Union was forced to surrender Fort Sumter. This battle affected the war because it was the first battle of the Civil War. This battle started the Civil War.

Confederates Ports Blockaded

In April of 1861, Lincoln ordered for Confederate ports, such as, Charleston Port, and Port Royal Sound to be blockaded by the U.S. Navy and if they could be occupied by land forces as well. This made it very difficult to get supplies to the Confederate troops, ultimately leading to them losing the Civil War. At Port Royal Sound, the union wanted to capture a coastal inlet to be a naval base.

South Carolina was impacted by the Civil War poorly. This was mainly because they could no longer own slaves and have them do the farmwork so many plantation owners in South Carolina went into debt as they could no longer keep their crops. Also, South Carolina was heavily involved in the Civil War and the battles destroyed towns and places and put them to rubish.

Governor Francis W. Pickens

Governor Francis W. Pickens had just started his job when delegates signed the ordinance secession. He was a plantation owner. He was a strong advocate of the states rights and belief. He believed that the states had primary rights over Congress. During the Civil War, he ordered fire upon the union's supply ship "Star of the West" when it tried to reach Fort Sumter during the battles of Fort Sumter. In December of 1862, after his term in office, Francis W. Pickens returned to his plantation in debt from the war.

Lieutenant General Daniel H. Hill

Daniel H. Hill was a Lieutenant General serving for the Confederates. Later, Hill became a Major General. He fought in the 7 Days Battle and the Battle of Fredericksburg. After, he transferred to the army of Tennessee and spent the rest of the war participating in minor campaigns.
