In this article the author questions the difference between saying something and meaning it and saying something and not meaning it. He states ¨Chaucer understands the intentional structure of all signs, based on the paradigm of language.¨ He argues that this is three-level semantics and is the heart of Chaucer´s poetry. Through this, the author says Chaucer is enabled to portray his characters psychologically. I agree with what the author is saying because through the symbols Chaucer creates in the story, it allows you to understand the characters thinking better. The reference to the yeoman coming from the north in the poem was a reference to him coming from hell. Both of these characters are supposed to be doing society a good thing and both take advantage of other people.
