The majority of its inhabits are part of the Hutu and Tutsi communities. The two groups had managed to live in harmony, despite their differences and minor disagreements. After Rwanda was granted independence from Belgium, and Hutu Juvénal Habyarimana came to power, their relationship changed. In 1990, the RPF, or the Rwandan Patriot Front, a Tutsi-led group known to oppose his rule invaded Rwanda. Habyarimana accused all Tutsi of being accomplices of the RPF, and discriminated against them as a result. In 1993, he signed the Arusha Accords, which set boundaries for Habryarimana's government and ensured peace among the Hutu and Tutsi. Over 800,000 Tutsis and allied Hutus were murdered, and over 2,000,000 refugees fled to neighboring countries. Amid this, the RPF remained in Rwanda. Burundi government official Pierre Nkurunzinza has abused his power reigniting conflict among the Tutsi and Hutu. An article by Teresa Pinto from Geopolitical Intelligence Services Online states that, "one of the main accusations against President Nkurunziza is that he is violating the spirit of the Arusha Accords, which have been crucial in neutralizing ethnic tensions between the two groups (Pinto)" (Genocide Watch, Geopolitical Intelligence Services Online).

Hutu extremists committed murder with the intent to destroy the population, which constitutes genocide.

This issue was addressed to some extent, as it was acknowledged as a mass genocide by many world leaders, and the Hutu extremists who instructed the genocide have been held accountable, however many people are unaware of its occurrence, and do not know the horrors that the Tutsi people faced during this tragic time. Additionally, the conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi is far from over (Genocide Watch).

This event was historically significant because it was one of the most tragic massacres of our time. It will forever impact the relationship between Hutu and Tutsi people.
