I would start my lesson by showing an interactive video of Bill Nye just simply explaining what solar energy is and its benefits. Then, I will have my students do an internet search with their partner answer question about:
1. What businesses in AZ use solar energy?
2. How much solar energy is consumed in AZ?
3. How can you purchase solar energy?
4. What is the sunniest state?
... and a couple more questions like that. After this assignment, we will create their own solar energy "panel". We will design an experiment in which if use a box with aluminum foil inside will it cook an egg? We will create a hypothesis, find the controlled and independent variable, and conduct the experiment. Each group of 2-4 students will bring in a shoe box or pizza box from home so they can create a solar panel. In their groups, the students will cover the inside of the box with aluminum foil with tape and tape a stick on the side to keep the box open. Once these boxes are all created we will put an egg onto the foil inside the box. We will check our projects and eggs the next day to see if our hypothesis' of each group were correct or wrong and will fill out a worksheet explain what each groups hypothesis was and if it was supported and a reflection on what solar energy is, how it is beneficial, and what they learned during this experiment.
The students will be graded on the work they submit, participation points on a rubric, and reflection of the assignment they turn in.
