Power (theme)

During times of need, knowledge is true power. This theme is seen in the first scene of the book; while the ship is in a tempest, the nobles come to the deck and start complaining to the workers. The boatswain responds by saying, "Do you not hear him? You mar our labor. / Keep your cabins. You do assist the storm" (Shakespeare 1. 1. 13-14). While the boat is in a tempest, the sailors are ultimately more powerful than the nobles because they know how to steer it. Money will not help the boat get out of the tempest in any way, but experience will. Hence, the nobles are powerless because their lives are in the hands of the experienced sailors.

Too many perspectives can ruin one's character while not enough perspectives can blind them from the truth.

One example of this is Miranda's first encounter with Ferdinand, in which she says, "I might call him / A thing divine, for nothing natural / I ever saw so noble" (Shakespeare 1. 2. 498-500). Miranda has grown up with her father for most of her life, so she hasn't gotten the chance to see (or know) any young men. Consequently, when she sees Ferdinand, she immediately falls in love with him. Prospero knows that Miranda hasn't had enough experience with other people, and she can be deceived into thinking Ferdinand is a good man without knowing much about him. So, he wants to first make sure that Ferdinand is truly someone who is of good character by temporarily enslaving him.

Act 2: Perspective

A person with a limited perspective has no choice but to respond to conflict with the methods that have been inflicted on them in their past. In a sense, a person can only use the tools that they have been given.

When Trinculo aggravates Caliban, Caliban responds by telling Stephano to "Beat [Trinculo] enough. / After a little time / I'll beat him too" (Shakespeare 3.2. 92-93).

Act 3: Power

A person who fails to overpower their desire for revenge will be compelled to take things too far.

Prospero, for example, sends Ariel as a Harpy to scare and torment the men he wants to get revenge on. While tormenting the three men, Ariel tells them, "I have made you mad; / And even with such-like valor, men hang and drown / Their proper selves" (Shakespeare 3. 3. 75-77).
