I am Black which means I was born without the privileges of other races. As a black person in the US I know that I am treated differently. When living in a society with a history of white supremacy, there's a different mindset of how to think about the two major races, Black and White. Black people are more easily accused of things than a white person. When I was 12 my dad had a conversation with me about the police and how to be calm around police because many black kids are mistreated by police.

As an African American person I am disadvantaged because I do not have the same knowledge of my ethnicity as other people. This is because my ancestors were slaves and their culture was almost erased from them. I do not know what country my ancestors were born in, what languages they spoke, or any cultural traditions. I can’t relate to others when talking about family history.

I was born a woman, which is a privilege in my opinion because women don’t have to deal with the pressures men have to act tough and be a certain way. But there are many disadvantages of being a woman as well. Women are thought of as weak and not smart enough to make their own decisions. Men feel it's easy to take advantage of women because of this, which makes it unsafe at times to be a woman. An example of this is how I have to be conscious of my own safety, like not being able to walk home alone or be outside when it’s late at night.

I have the privilege of being straight because that is what is considered “normal” in my society. Being straight means I don’t have to worry about people judging me because I like the same sex. Many people judge the LGBTQ+ community, or anything out of the ordinary that they're unfamiliar with, because of stereotypes. When I was in middle school I saw a boy getting picked on because he was gay and it bothered me because I believe you should try to see people for who they are instead of what they like.

I give back to the homeless. They have a disadvantage in life because they are unfortunate and are indeed. I give back because I have empathy for those who are struggling because my family struggles as well. We’re on section 8 and the neighborhood I live in is bad. It's a high rate of gun violence and a place where everybody is just trying to get by. 2 years ago my moms friend got shot right in front of our house. They were just coming from a party and just hanging out at my mom's house. Due to the gang rivalry in our neighborhood, 2 boys came down the street and let shots fire at the crowd. One of my moms friends got hit and there were bullet holes in my moms car.

am privileged because I get to receive an education and have the ability to learn as well as not having to forcefully get married. Other countries don't get to have the freedom that I do to make those choices on their own. Some women and other countries still don’t have rights. The United States is a developed country, meaning we have usable sources such as technology, clean water, electricity, fresh food, etc. I believe that as an American I have the right to my freedom of speech and the rest of my amendments

I am a young adult, so I have spent most of my life as a child. Even though different households have different parenting styles, in general adults are considered the authority over children and this is a big disadvantage. Kids often feel unheard because their parents don't acknowledge their concerns and problems. In my experience I grew up around adults who felt like they were entitled to belittle me and frequently claimed I was being “disrespectful" as an excuse to discipline. In my experience adults don’t like being wrong and acknowledging that they're wrong in certain situations.
