PAGLAYA

---

The exhibition showcases the works of LAMBANA – Angono Women Artists Collective, the region's first and only all-women artists’ group. This exhibition aligns with CAMP’s #ZeroStigmaPH advocacy, emphasizing the significance of Neutral Spaces—environments where difficult topics can be explored without fear of judgment. Through their artistry, the women of LAMBANA challenge societal stigmas, using creative expression to foster open, empathetic conversations. Their work serves as a powerful testament to the role of women and art in promoting inclusivity, understanding, and social change.

PAGLAYA: Art as Freedom, Art as Advocacy

In 2025, LAMBANA takes a bold step forward with PAGLAYA, a groundbreaking exhibition that highlights the personal and collective journeys of 12 Participating LAMBANA members: Cecille Artillaga, Grets Balajadia, Gem Yonzon Blanco, Joy Vocalan Cruz, Sarah Geneblazo, Rosalie Vitor Gonzales, Haidee Juban, Keiye Miranda, Inang Elvira Santos, Kim Sison, Lady Visconde, and Lucila Gragera Zara

The creative process for PAGLAYA was deeply personal, with each artist reflecting on the lived experiences of women and girls in Angono and beyond. Before creating their works, the artists were confronted with stark and urgent realities—rising mental health issues, increasing HIV cases, polarizing issues on sexuality and gender identities, and high rates of teenage pregnancy. These conversations surfaced a troubling constant: stigma remains a pervasive barrier, silencing crucial dialogues about these issues within Filipino homes, where openness and support should begin.

Each artwork in PAGLAYA channels the artist’s personal reckoning with these realities, translating stories of silence, struggle, and survival into visual expressions of courage, empathy, and healing. The exhibit aligns with #ZeroStigmaPH, CAMP’s national campaign that uses art to foster Neutral Spaces—creative, judgment-free environments where difficult conversations around health, sexuality, and gender can safely unfold.

This piece represents a journey toward a harmonious and inclusive society, where individuals of all genders come together, free from discrimination.

The artwork is divided into two main sections. The lower section depicts distinct clusters of individuals, each represented by a different color, symbolizing various genders. These clusters interact primarily within their own groups, illustrating initial separation and division.

As the artwork progresses upward, the clusters begin to merge. Individuals from different gender groups start to interact, connect, and support one another. The colors blend harmoniously, creating a striking visual representation of unity and inclusivity.

The world around her swirls with judgment and misunderstanding, yet within, she carries a quiet strength—a defiance against the storms that seek to define her. She depicts female figures solitary and burdened as if weighed down heavily by their delicate sheer garments that represent the predominant ideologies shackling a woman’s self-worth to her domestic ‘duty.’

For her, womanhood shouldn’t be anything but freedom – freedom to choose, to find happiness, to heal, to change, and to be the change.

Amidst a barren landscape, where the earth lies cracked and weary, a single flower rises. Its stem, fragile yet unyielding, pushes through the hardened soil, defying the weight of what came before. Its petals, soft yet vibrant, stretch toward the sky, catching the first light of dawn.

Around it, the world remains desolate—shades of gray, remnants of struggle, echoes of storms that once raged. Yet in this quiet moment, color returns. The flower is more than a bloom; it is a declaration. A whisper of resilience. A sign that even in the harshest places, beauty can take root.

Hope is like that—it does not erase the past or promise an easy path ahead. But it grows. It endures. It reminds us that no matter how dry the soil or how long the night, life finds a way to break through. And when it does, it carries with it the promise of more.

Lucila was born and raised in Angono, Rizal, known as the Art Capital of the Philippines. She graduated with degrees in Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology and Education, practiced the medical profession in her hometown, subsequently teaching Science and Math and overall art adviser in all year levels at Angono Private High School. She migrated to New York City as a teacher under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of NYC. The University of the State of New York granted her a certificate to teach general academics in NYS. She attended trainings and seminars for People with Developmental Disabilities, thus, was given the permit to teach Special Education. Lucila became a Habilitation Specialist III and Qualified Developmental Disabilities Professional, teaching and creating programs for young adults with special needs. In 1998, she received a Presidential Award for service to and writing essays about PWDD. After 25 yrs in NYC, she and her family moved to Scotch Plains, NJ, continuing her job in NYC.

Art has always been a part of her, despite the lack of formal studies on art. Growing up in her town, she was always surrounded by artists, her late brother, being one of them. She has 3 children, one of which attained her Bachelors in Fine Arts and English Literature at Hunter College. Mother and daughter decided to open their doors and share their love of painting with others. The idea is to show that anyone can start with a blank canvas and turn it into something beautiful. So began the 'Let's Monet Paint and Sip', a home based classes featuring prints of classical and contemporary artists, children and adults learning from models of varied styles and subjects. As the Creative Director, Lucila watch children and adults paint, see their excitement, focus, determination, and most importantly, the sheer joy of being in the moment.

Having the artist's blood in her, and a desire to paint comes natural to her. She found a love of contemporary realism, painting moments in time and places, often times based on her own and family's photographs. Lucila likes to paint in acrylic, but also do watercolor and oil. Painting makes her get back to her inner child and experience the joy one feels in the moment of creating art. She feels a sense of accomplishment and confidence that can take in her daily life.

She had two exhibits with fellow artists in Manhattan and Scotch Plains. New Jersey. Always coming back to her hometown, she is now a proud member of Angono Women's Artists Collective (Lambana) and The Blanco Art Group with past exhibits at Angono Art Center, Angkla Art Gallery, Giant Dwarf Art Space, White Space in Manila, Fisher Mall in Quezon City and Malabon, and at The Blanco Art Gallery.

Lucila hopes she can help people who want to be artists, do what they love to do, and achieve their goals while expanding their appreciation for the arts.

PAGLAYA: The Art of Breaking Free

In the heart of Angono, the Art Capital of the Philippines, a quiet yet powerful revolution is unfolding. LAMBANA: Angono Women Artists Collective, the town’s first all-women artist group, is making history once again with PAGLAYA, an exhibition that boldly confronts the realities of stigma, silence, and resilience. Featuring the works of 12 remarkable artists, PAGLAYA is more than an art showcase—it is a declaration of freedom, a testament to courage, and a call to action for a more inclusive and stigma-free society.

A Movement Rooted in Heritage, Evolving Through Advocacy

Lambana PH was founded in 2020 in celebration of Women’s Month, bringing together female artists from various local art groups, galleries, and museums. Inspired by the mystical Lambana, winged guardians in Angono’s folklore, the collective embodies purity, creativity, and the spirit of protection. But beyond myth and tradition, LAMBANA is driven by a fierce commitment to social change, using art as a medium to challenge systemic barriers that affect women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people facing mental health and sexual health stigma.
.
By 2025, LAMBANA’s members are no longer just artists—they are storytellers, advocates, and leaders in a cultural movement that seeks to dismantle prejudice and foster understanding. PAGLAYA is their latest—and perhaps most urgent—manifestation of this mission.
.
Artworks that Speak: Stories of Struggle, Strength, and Liberation

Each artwork in PAGLAYA is a deeply personal reckoning with societal challenges that women and marginalized communities face. Before creating their works, the artists engaged in discussions about mental health struggles, rising HIV cases, gender identity and discrimination, and teenage pregnancy—conversations that revealed one troubling constant: stigma remains a silencing force within Filipino homes and communities. Through their art, these women break the silence and transform their personal truths into visual expressions of courage, empathy, and healing.
.
1. FLORAL METAMORPHOSIS by Cecille Artillaga

Using mixed media, this artwork illustrates transformation through the beauty of flowers, symbolizing growth, change, and renewal. When displayed upside down, it takes on a different meaning—a bird in flight, breaking free.
.
2. LIFE SENTENCE by Grets Balajadia

A haunting depiction of confinement, this piece reflects the lifelong burden of stigma, especially for those who are not accepted for who they truly are. The image, obstructed by wooden blocks, evokes a sense of being trapped—living in fear, weighed down by judgement.
.
3. PAGBANGON by Gem Yonzon Blanco

Despite extreme poverty, many Filipino women and children uphold their pride and dignity, believing that perseverance and hard work can lead to liberation. This piece is a tribute to that unwavering strength.
.
4. BINTANA by Joy Vocalan Cruz

A window serves as both a barrier and a gateway. This piece portrays the struggle between fear and freedom, between keeping silent and opening up to healing. Through vibrant hues and layered textures, the work reminds us that change begins when we choose to open our windows, our minds, and our hearts.
.
5. PAGLAYA by Joy Vocalan Cruz

This striking artwork symbolizes the moment of breaking free from stigma, reclaiming one’s truth, and creating Neutral Spaces where acceptance can thrive.
.
6. FEMALE LORE by Sarah Geneblazo

A deeply personal work that channels the artist’s own experiences of childhood trauma. Female Lore challenges restrictive societal expectations imposed on women and asserts that womanhood is about freedom—to choose, to heal, and to redefine one's own path.
.
7. EISAI ACIOS (YOU ARE WORTHY) by Rosalie Vitor Gonzales

This empowering piece reminds viewers that imperfection does not define worth. No matter the struggles, resilience and faith can lead to self-rebuilding and healing.
.
8. TIMAWA (MALAYA) by Haidee Juban

This work embodies the essence of freedom—freedom from societal constraints, discrimination, and internalized pain. Through dynamic movement and rhythm, it conveys a desire to break free from oppression and reclaim self-worth.
.
9. CUBE ON THE ROCKS by Keiye Miranda

A reflection on mental health, this piece underscores the importance of coping mechanisms and human connection. The Rubik’s Cube represents the therapeutic process of problem-solving, while the ice elements symbolize preservation and resilience.
.
10. INCLUSIVE by Elvira Dulce Santos

This work envisions a society where all genders coexist in harmony, moving away from division toward unity. The gradual blending of colors in the piece illustrates the journey toward inclusivity and acceptance.
.
11. BREAKING THROUGH by Kim Sison

A single flower blooms amidst a barren landscape—a symbol of resilience. This artwork speaks of the persistence of hope, proving that even in the harshest environments, life finds a way.
.
12. PAG-ASA by Lady Vizconde

A visually striking work, PAG-ASA incorporates powerful symbols: a red ribbon to signify HIV awareness, four birds representing hope and freedom, a rainbow flag advocating LGBTQ+ rights, and a lotus flower embodying renewal and resilience.
.
13. BETWEEN STORMS AND STILLNESS by Lucila Gragera Zara

At the intersection of chaos and calm, this work reflects the strength required to embrace one’s truth amidst stigma and misunderstanding.
.
14. HELD IN FREEDOM by Lucila Gragera Zara

This piece is a poignant reminder that compassion and understanding are the keys to breaking free from stigma. It calls for open dialogue, education, and support as means of achieving true liberation.
.
Why PAGLAYA Matters: A Call to Action

The issues confronted in PAGLAYA—mental health, HIV awareness, sexuality, and gender identity—are often buried under layers of stigma within Filipino society. Conversations that should begin in safe spaces like homes and schools are instead suppressed, leaving individuals to navigate their struggles in isolation. Through PAGLAYA, LAMBANA is making a powerful statement: art can be a catalyst for change.

The exhibition aligns with #ZeroStigmaPH, the national campaign spearheaded by Culture and Arts Managers of the Philippines CAMP Pag-ayo, Inc., which promotes Neutral Spaces—creative environments where discussions about health, identity, and social issues can happen freely and without fear of discrimination.
Now, more than ever, we need to support artists who use their craft to challenge norms and amplify marginalized voices. PAGLAYA is not just an exhibition—it is a movement. And you are invited to be part of it.
.
📲 Discover More & Support the #ZeroStigmaPH Advocacy

🔹 Visit the Gallery at Camp Neñada Community Center (Angono, Rizal - inside Scrapyard Cafe and Restaurant) It will be available for viewing DAILY until 10:00pm, until APRIL 30, 2025: Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/CampNenadaCommunityCenter

🔹 Bid on Artworks That Matter: Scan the QR codes at the gallery to access online catalogs and place bids.

🔹 Explore the Exhibition Catalogue for an in-depth look at featured artists and their works: Exhibition Catalogue - https://padlet.com/CampTeam/Lambana_Paglaya

Join us in using art for social change!

#ZeroStigmaPH #CreativityForSocialChange
