So You Want to Be President by Judith St. George

This book is chocked full of facts, illustrations and interesting tidbits about the first 42 Presidents of the US. It is very interesting and informative but would be too long for a single read aloud setting and I'm not sure how well it would keep the attention of my younger students. This would be a fun book to use in Social Studies when learning about the Presidents of the United States. This book is meant for grades 2-5.

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema

A West African folktale that re-counts the strange chain reaction stemming from a mosquito gossiping with an iguana. Bizarre and a little morbid but I still enjoyed it. The lion king's repetitive recount of the situation reminds me of the "There was an old lady..." books. This book is meant for grades K-3 and may be a good book to use with sequencing.

Owl moon is about a child and her father trekking through the cold winter woods in search of an owl. I enjoyed the descriptive language and the beautiful pictures but this was not my favorite of the books I chose. I think it would be a good book teachers could use when discussing figurative language. This book is for grades PreK-2.

Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattick

I've always loved Winnie the Pooh and was excited to read this true account of how the stories of Winnie the Pooh came to be. I enjoyed the actual photographs of the real Winnie and her adventures. I think this would be a good book to use along with the Winnie the Pooh books to show a compare and contrast of fiction vs. nonfiction. This book is meant for grade PreK-3.

The Adventures of Beekle is about an imaginary friend that got tired of waiting for someone to imagine him, so he went in search of a friend. I thought this was a cute story about bravery, courage and friendship. This would definitely be better suited for looking at friendship with my younger students. I would also recommend this book to the counselor. This book is meant for students in grades PreK-3.

One boy's account of his magical adventure to the North Pole on Christmas eve aboard the Polar Express. I've seen the movie and K/1 teachers share this book each Christmas with their students but I had never read it until today. It's remarkable how someone could take key points from this short book and turn it into a 100 minute movie. I loved the pictures. This book is meant for grades PreK-3.

Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast are good friends until they realize there is not enough syrup left for both of them. Their friendship morphs to frenemies as they race to see who gets to the syrup first. This is definitely a book I would recommend to the school counselor. It is a cute story that could help kids work through friendship issues. Although this is meant for grades K-2, I could see my older students enjoying this book as well.

The main character starts off a happy seed until life throws him a curve ball and from then on he decides he is going to be bad. He continues down this path of "bad"ness until he decides he's ready for a change. Yet another book I would share with the school counselor. This would be a good book for those kids that feel they are bad, to show that they were not born this way, they can make better choices if they work hard. This book is meant for grade Pre-K through 3rd (although my older kids tend to check it out more).
