In my visit to PS312 in Brooklyn , Ny My colleague and I were welcomed warmly by administration. It set a very positive tone in the building. Majority of the day was spent with Mrs. D’Onofrio the assistant principal where we did an observation and debriefed afterward. We attended a meeting with the principal as well and saw a great dynamic among staff relationships. We learned that two of their focus points are visibility, being around staff and getting to know the students, and delivery, being cognizant of how you convey information in meetings such as your tone and body language.

My first shadowing experience allowed me the opportunity to attend a grade meeting, participate in a grade walk-through, an observation, and cafeteria duty. The leadership was an incredible example of sharing a vision with staff and communicating with clarity ways to achieve that vision. This was a valuable experience and I had the opportunity to see the ways they work with teachers and students to achieve high expectations.

During my shadowing assignment with Aankit Patel (#CS4ALL Director) I learned that creating partnerships between companies and schools have many aspects needed to considered such as demographics, and needs of both parties. All correspondences need to be short and succinct. Surprisingly not all schools what to partner with companies for various reasons. I also sat at a Founders Meeting at 52 Chambers. The meeting's focus was creating buy-in, introducing concepts, engaging audience, and lasting impressions. Excellent experience.

I was fortunate to shadow Dennis Forde at P.S. 6. During my visit, I was able to participate in morning arrival, greet students, and become familiar with the varied arrival procedures. At P.S. 6 there is a 30% special education population. I was brought into every classroom in the building and was able to see how they are meeting the needs of all learners. I was able to sit in on two informal observations and discuss a glow and a grow for each teacher I visited with Mr. Forde. I was also able to meet the principal Ms. Waters and discuss the Impact Teamwork the school is working on. The greatest part of my visit, was witnessing the open communication and collaboration Mr. Forde and Ms. Waters had with each other. It was truly an amazing experience.

Approximately two weeks ago I shadowed the AP English at New Dorp High School. One thing that I learned was that an administrator has to be aware of any issues his or her staff may have. The experience definitely made for an interesting morning.

They welcomed us and really made an effort to let us see the ins and outs of their building. The biggest thing I came away with is the importance of strong, and innovative leadership. Every building has there own issues and challenges, but strong leadership is strong leadership. Having the pulse of the building, understanding the needs of staff, support staff, and students was clearly evident. I admire the administrations ability to think forward, and look at each decision and how it affects all stakeholders. There was just so much I learned ,and would love to go back and learn more.

During my shadowing experience, I learned quickly that there is no such thing as a "typical" day if you are an assistant principal. There is a typical plan for the day that stays that same, but following that plan may not happen.

An AP wears many hats. During my time shadowing, the AP was making phone-calls to parents, stopping a melt-down of a special needs child, dealing with busing, supervising lunch duty, and frequently communicating with the principal and just about everyone else in the school community. She didn't miss a beat, and did this all with a smile as the paperwork piled up on her desk (safety team messages, OORs reports to be entered, observations that had to be rescheduled, etc.). The main focus was always doing what was best for kids. :)

I spent the morning at breakfast duty and then helping two children who had a difficult time transitioning to class. Ms. Hogan's approach and with these students is to be commended and reinforced the learning I have had in TCIS. We went on two informal observations and then
debriefed with a second grade teacher. Collaberation between administrator and staff was clear, as both worked together for better outcomes in student work.

Eagle Academy for young men:

I enjoyed my time here with Mr. Manradgh. The program that is set up for these young men is very impressive. Mr. Manradgh not only has the respect of his students, but the respect of his staff. We attended a teachers' professional period. The teachers had a clear agenda, that was goal driven. They had assigned roles and worked together to promote student growth. The structure of this meeting that was set up by Mr. Manradgh allowed the teachers to stay focused and stay on task to promote student growth. He is diligent about supporting his teachers and supplying feedback to the teachers. The value in the experience and watching how different leaders go through the course of the day is the best knowledge.

Shadowing at Tottenville / I.S.49 / New Dorp: I found the shadowing experience to be great! The behind the scenes is so busy that 2 of the leaders hadn't had the opportunity to eat a single thing. Already planning to have small bags of nuts, and pre-cut fruits. I was able to see Principal Scarmato hold a lunch and learn, take low-inference notes alongside Mr. Antinoro on an observation, and see how Principal DeFrancesco deescalates emotionaly charged students in addition to many other valuable things. I participated in greeting students entering the buildings, cabinet meetings, visits from parents, another principal, and district office representatives. It was also evident that community relationships are key to the success of schools. No school is an island and no leader is without a supportive team.

I had the pleasure of shadowing Danielle Martinson, assistant principal of English and Special Ed. My experience at IS 75 gave me a glance at how leaders truly must work collaboratively in order to build capacity within a school building. I was afforded the opportunity to sit in on a cabinet meeting, where leaders bounced ideas about programming and action plans within the school that they would like to move forward with. Aside from the learning walks, and observations, the best part of the day was when Danielle let me pick her brain with questions that I had about being a productive leader within a building. It was during this time that I really understood how willing leaders must be to motivate, encourage and guide others within the learning community.

We went over many, although I'm sure not all of the aspects of the position. She showed me the budget, all the things she does with it, WOW! We did an observation of an english teacher in an ICT setting. We spoke about all the different AP positions there and what they do. It was very clear that HS and middle school (where I am from) are very different) The day flew by! I feel I could have learned so much more and wish I had another day to do so. All in all it was a great learning experience with an awesome administrator!

It became even clearer that safety and security are key to ensuring teachers are supported and an effective instruction can be delivered in any building.

Even though the principal is facing tons of grievances, he maintains that the students come first and that their learning is paramount. He lead a lunch and learn to model some practices for increasing rigor and actively
involving all learners in a socratic seminar. I also had the ability to sit in on a post observation conference to witness how discussions regarding the expectations are handled.

My shadowing experience at IS 27 was hectic. This particular day was very busy and I was very busy. I helped deal with upset parents, was present at a post-observation conference, lunch duty, hall sweep, arrival/dismissal and an OORS report. It was a true experience of the daily happenings at a middle school. Definitely not boring!

During this experience, I was primarily taken on observations and discussed the rating of lessons, planning pre and post observation conferences with educators, and completing observations in Advance. I also worked with this building leader on preparing Monday PD, empowering teachers within one's staff to drive instructional practices, and the importance of parental outreach.

John Jay High School Campus I was fortunate enough to experience a campus setting in Brooklyn. It was an enlightening experience as I was informed as to how a building is shared among five different schools in one building. I also learned how significant it is that the administrations of these various schools have to work together to ensure the safety of all students in their building. I also learned how closely the school has to work with the residents and businesses in the community to maintain the harmony of the community.
