Volunteer Hours-Do we need them for college?

Most colleges aren't going to REQUIRE them; however, volunteering is a central part of a well-rounded student and resume, so it is recommended. It is also usually better to be involved more extensively with one or two groups than just randomly, a day or two with a variety of groups. Colleges like to see commitment. You can find volunteering opportunities on many local community sites.

Many schools have their applications open already. Others will open soon. Compile a list of where you want to apply and then go to that school's website and see what their application timeline is. Students can use the Common App or Apply Texas websites to apply to several colleges easier.

I need to take the SAT exam for my college admission

You can go to the college board website to sign up for a test in your local area.

We offer the SAT for seniors at UTHS on October 22nd, 2025. An email has been sent to all students and parents for registration. The deadline to sign up is Sept. 22nd.

Have most colleges reinstated the need for the SAT/ACT? I know that at one point during the past few years colleges had stopped requiring them.

It truly depends on each college. You should research your possible schools to see what they want/suggest. Some colleges have reinstated the testing requirements, while others have not.

If we are top 10%, how will we let the college know on our application when applying?

Senior class rank will be run after the fall semester in the spring. If the student ranks in the top 10% of the graduating class, UTHS administration will provide them with a letter to use with their application. If the student does not meet the top 10 % status, they will use DNR (Do Not Rank) for reporting rank.

If you don’t need or won’t qualify for financial aid do you still have to fill out the FAFSA for most universities?

In order to graduate in Texas, you need to either complete the FAFSA submission or complete an FAFSA Opt-out form in your Advisory 12 course. Many colleges do require it, but you can call those you are considering to ask their financial aid office. Many use the information for scholarship opportunities and their freshman class data.

Students can order a cap and gown from any provider like Balfour, Herff-Jones, etc. if they want one sooner or for senior pictures. UTHS uses matte black caps and gowns so they should be easy to obtain. Tassels will be provided

You may want to consider using a recommender that you already know from a previous school since most applications are sent in the fall. You want that recommender to really capture the good work that you have done over time.

Yes. If you have just enrolled at UTHS, all past courses and grades will be manually entered by our registrars asap. They do prioritize Senior grade history.

UTHS does not issue student ID's. You can request a transcript by submitting the digital Request a Transcript form.

Transcripts for new students

For students who transferred this year , do they need to request transcripts from UTHS and where they moved from? Or do all the classes from both schools show up in UTHS transcripts

When your transcript is completed by UTHS staff, all grades from previous schools will be listed on the Final Transcript.

Yes, however, it is always a good idea to let us know to expect a request for a rec letter, especially if you want a rec letter that is tailored specifically to you and your strengths as a student.
