I noticed this sticker on the walk back to my dorm while I was waiting to cross the street. What struck me was the bohemian pattern inside the letters. Despite this, the letters retain enough clarity because of the thick black outline. This is pretty genius because the poster is calling for abolition of the police, and then gives its reason; the RPD have been perpetuating gun violence in the city. Even though the letters aren't made from lines, the negative spaces in the letters are clear enough for the letter shapes to make sense. There is also more space than usual between the letters which helps make sure each bullet hole stays with its letter. The letters are different sizes and not lined up perfectly on one baseline, but they still look well balanced and readable. This sticker was calling for a strike and unity amongst workers. I like the fact that all of the letters are capitalized, bold, and sanserif. They are strong, simple and attention getting, which fits the the message well. I don't believe this is intentional, but the letters, despite their boldness, are a little weathered. I am not sure if its from the paper disintegrating, or a conscious choice by the typographer, but I like it. This roiling mud also gives the letters a feeling of gelatinous movement. Not only does the 'mud' give the letters a feeling of three dimensionality, but the letters are actually boxes reaching back in space. The vanishing point for the top line is off to the right, and the vanishing point for the bottom row is off to the left. It almost gives the effects of the letters curving around. The San-Serif makes the letters look very modern, and perhaps futuristic. The text is center aligned, and (in tandem with my camera angle) it makes the "the" look like its perched up on a tall building peering down at the rest of the poster. I think the letters being hollowed out, and having the background so dark is an effective way to contrast the letters with their background. I like the commitment to the idea of the brain wrinkles, but the ripping to the "r" makes it a little difficult for the letter, and by extension the work, to read well. The line weight is really intense, but I'm not convinced that its really working for the letters. The extra tails being folded back and forth to emulate the brain folds make letters like the "t's" and "r's" a bit difficult to read. This is a promotional sticker - and I think its incredibly successful because I stopped to investigate (it doesn't hurt that the graphic to the right is a cat). I think the colors are nice, but I'm not convinced that it's very visible from far away, but conversely, it can draw people in who are curious to see what exactly the letters are spelling. The magenta letters behind the sea foam letters are what keep the letters from completely fade into the lavender. All of the spindly serifs and flowing tails and embellishments caught my eye immediately. I believe I found this typeface around Halloween so it felt very appropriate. Another thing about this typeface I really enjoyed was despite all of the elaborate lines coming off of it, the individual letters are incredibly legible - There was good kearning and tracking throughout. Of all of the detailed typefaces, I like this one the best. Another impressive feat is how the letters stand out despite the more detailed background (by comparison) that also contains shifting values. I've used this magazine cover before in a discussion post for class, but I love the subtlety of this typeface. It is a script font, but I feel like it has good strong stems and vertical strokes none the less. The tracking looks good because the letters are connected are smoothly connected, and the letters that aren't (ie, the "r's" terminal). What's awesome about this was this was the day that I also discovered a closer bus stop to our apartment. When reviewing all of the text, this one stood out because the counters of the "o's" were tilted to the left. The stress of the "c" also follows this tilt. It reminded me (distantly) of some of the really zoomed in images of TrueType I've seen! A really interesting part of this typeface is the fact that it's an ombre running down the letters. This, coupled with the light blue lines running through the letters gives a feeling of movement vertically down a screen. I really like how the letters have pretty solid slab bodies with the drips added to the edges and bottoms of the letter. They aren't as liquid as the other typefaces usually are - they have a bit of heft to them. This also helps keep the letters are appropriately leadered - Drips can interfere with how the lines of text are spaced. This gives the illusion that the letters are raised, 3D objects cast in something shiny. Whats interesting is that left hand serifs and terminals appear as just outlines. I think it was really smart for the designer to keep all of the letters uppercase - I think that makes this effect even more mesmerizing. The goldenrod yellow can be read effectively from the background, and even makes it look as though its lit only by fire. What struck me about this typeface was that the letters don't look remotely uniform - they're a bit lopsided and and sized strangely. The x height looks a little arbitrary in the first line (though this issue resolves itself in the by-line). Because this typeface insists on the letters not running into each other, the tracking throughout is odd. The kearning could be adjusted to let the lowercase letters sit closer to each other. This poster was definitely made in canva. I really like the 3D quality of these letters - it makes them pretty unique. This typeface reminds me of courier new, but it doesn't have completely steady lines, so it has a hand-written aesthetic. I think that center alignment isn't inherently bad, but all of the lowercase letters make the entire format feel a bit odd and awkward. Chaos is cool, but some things need to just be legible. This typeface feels like someone trying to claw their way out of their brain. Sometime over the summer, Divorce Culture's and Monolith DC's art made it down to Richmond. I'm not sure if these two street artists based in DC came down themselves, or if they had a dedicated fan who saw similar issues in Richmond. Either way, it's been really fun to follow their work through the city. I believe both of them design their own typefaces, which is really exciting. They can make the letters tie into the work and further enhance it. You can't see it, but below these letters is a skeleton riding an H bomb, which makes the charred looking letters very appropriate. The letters look like they should be embers of wood cooling down and crumbling with the condos. I think it's very impressive that with all of their typefaces, Divorce Culture always manages to make appropriate fonts that are detailed, but don't get lost in the sauce.
