Inventing my own identity

I invented a new identity when I entered high school and decided to join football. I had run cross country my entire life but I wanted to switch it up and play football. This changed my identity in the school because had I stayed as a cross country runner freshman year I might've been closer friends with some of my Cross country teammates instead of making new friends on the football team. I could've also been known as the cross-country guy instead of a football player, so I'd be viewed differently by other people in the school. It felt similar to when Orvil tried in the regalia for the first time. He was putting on his “new uniform” and inventing a new part of himself. Similar to when I put on the logan football uniform, I'm viewed as a football player and that became a part of my identity.

Orvil is a character who is trying to find his native identity throughout the book. He tries on a regalia for the first time, which is a type of clothing worn at powwows. Then he joins the Big Oakland Powwow to dance in it. He is talked to by a leader and he explains that it isn't just a dance, it’s a prayer. He invents new ways to honor his native identity through the book.

These two quotes show that Jaquie is maintaining her native identity by looking back at her past native actions. She reflects on her time at Alcatraz and talks about it to others. Jaquie also has two feather tattoos, feathers represent honor and connection in native culture. She holds onto her native identity dearly and will you display it without shame.
