         <description><![CDATA[<div>Cicero was born to a wealthy equestrian family. His family was part of the upper-middle class. His father provided both Cicero and his brother the best education in<br>Italy.&nbsp; He received&nbsp;<em>toga virilis</em>&nbsp;at the age of 15 or 16.  Later he studied law, which in Rome, went along with politics.  He was also studying to master the liberal arts to enhance his law degree.  He became a well rounded person because of his wealth and education.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Military Tribune- Cicero served under Cornelius Sulla for his mandatory 10 years of military service, in the Italian Social Wars.&nbsp;<br><br>Quaestor-&nbsp; Cicero was elected to Quaestor in 75 B.C,&nbsp; in Lilybaeum (part of modern Sicily) as part of the governor's staff, and gained him life membership in the Senate.&nbsp;<br><br>Aedile- Cicero was elected to Aedile in 70 B.C, and was partly in charge of the administration of Rome, and the lavish games to appease the public. Cicero found it quite distasteful<br><br>Praetor- Cicero was elected to Praetor in 67 B.C, and essentially served as a major judge in Rome. He supported Pompey's control of the military during this time.&nbsp;<br><br>Consul- After a series of difficulties in being elected to Consul, Cicero rises to the highest office in the Roman Republic in 64 B.C. He then unravels the Catiline Conspiracy during his Consular year, but did not succeed in fixing the underlying problems in the Republic and society that would later spark in the Civil War, and the rise of the Empire. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>They were the Populares, or "Demagogues," and the Optimates, or "Best Men." The Populares tried to ensure tribunician support for policies, which the Optimates didn't like because they wanted to maintain an oligarchy. The Optimates were the dominant group and blocked most efforts from the Populares. The Populares eventually gained more power through people like the Gracchi and provincial army commanders.</div>]]></description>

Would have started with Cicero's assassination early morning on Nov. 7, 63 BC, but Quintius Curius warned Cicero via his mistress Fulvia. Cicero exposed the plot, forcing Catiline to flee from Rome.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Terentia</strong> (first wife) - possible daughter of the Terentii Varrones (the most important senatorial branch of that family), half-sister of the Vestial Virgin Fabia, inherited her father's immense wealth after his death, divorced with Cicero after 30 years of marriage<br><strong>Tullia Ciceronis</strong> (daughter) - the only daughter of Cicero, loved deeply by Cicero, died from illness in February 45 BC, referred by Cicero after her death: "I have lost the one thing that bound me to life."<br><strong>Marcus Tullius Cicero Minor</strong> (son) - the only son of Cicero, joined the military against Cicero's wishes for him to be a philosopher, pardoned by Caesar, sent to Athens to study philosophy but instead went to "eat, drink and be merry", rejoined the army after his father's death, pardoned by Augustus, became an augur (priest) and consul, revoked the honors of Mark Antony, and was eventually appointed proconsul of Syria and the province of Asia<br><strong>Publilia</strong> (wife) - a young girl (14 or 15) and ward of Cicero, needed by Cicero for her money (to repay dowry of the wealthy Terentia), yet their marriage quickly fell apart</div>]]></description>
