         <description><![CDATA[<div>https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/hot-planet/global-warming-how-hot-exactly-is-it-going-to-get/<br><br>We know greenhouse gases warm the planet, but we don't know the essential knowledge of just how warm the earth will become. Human behavior is almost impossible to accurately predict in the long run and on such a large scale, so therefore we cannot predict the future. people of the future might use energy more efficiently, or people can continue down the path we are currently on. Even if we remove all the uncertainty's with human behavior, there is still much we do not know. We can use climate models to test the warming and impacts of increased greenhouse gases, but the future is still unpredictable, even if we have some estimates, possible outcomes, etc. We do not know nothing, but we do not know the answer, either. Changes to the planet with global warming can speed up or slow down the warming we have caused, but in this case it is going to make things worse. We test the earths sensitivity to carbon dioxide, and our future will depend on that sensitivity. These models tell us useful things about our planet but are still not perfect and have inaccuracies. <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

Climate change has both direct and indirect implications on mental health. poor air quality, displacement and housing insecurity, food and water insecurity, and social isolation have been impacted by the increases in temperature and altered weather across B.C. This has an impact on people's health. Older people and children, especially with pre-existing conditions, are even more vulnerable than others.Health care providers and first responders are also vulnerable in the context of disasters. The impacts of climate change on mental health has proven to be very challenging to measure due to the nature of the problems of causation and attribution.  <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

Although the earth has been increasing in temperature for a very long time, there has been a rapid increase, due to the increase use of fossil fuels by humans overtime. This global warming has presented a new issue named climate change. These terms are used interchangeably but they are indeed different. Climate change is the change in weather and growing seasons around the world. Sea levels have risen, due to ice melting because of the warmer temperatures. This change poses a threat to the life on the planet. </div>]]></description>

If we address climate change, it would strengthen the economy. Also, climate change reports are reliable because they are written by scientists and not politicians.          <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-global-warming-a-myth/">https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-global-warming-a-myth/</a><br><br>There are global warming skeptics seem to be a vocal minority. Today, these skeptics don't doubt that the earth is experiencing a global warming, rather skeptics in society today are skeptic about the consensus that the warming caused by human induced emissions of greenhouse gases. Some believe that there is no substantial or accurate observations or measurements in understanding if humans are playing a key role in the global warming of the planet, or if there are natural occurrences at play here. Some say that it is difficult to detect given the natural climate fluctuations of the planet, that observations say any warming from the growth of greenhouse gases is likely to be minor. Green leaders maintain that some warming is caused by natural fluctuations, but there is still something causes such a dramatic increase in temperature. Some possible (natural) explanations include increased output from the sun, increased absorption of the sun’s heat due to a change in the Earth’s reflectivity, or a change in the internal climate system that transfers heat to the atmosphere. Though scientists have not been able to validate such reasons. Many organizations have maintained the stance that humans are having an impact because of the greenhouse gases emissions, and that humans will most likely cause a increase in temperature throughout the next century.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="https://theconversation.com/radium-revealed-120-years-since-curies-found-the-most-radioactive-substance-on-the-planet-108945">https://theconversation.com/radium-revealed-120-years-since-curies-found-the-most-radioactive-substance-on-the-planet-108945</a><br><br>Henri Becquerel accidentally discovered a new type of ray while researching X-rays, which were new at the time. He discovered radiation coming off of uranium. Marie Curie decided that more was to be discovered from Henri's uranium rays. She used tools from her brothers and found that uranium ores have greater emissions than pure uranium. Pierre then went and decided to help her explain why. They soon discovered a new element that gave off similar radiation and named it polonium, and coined the term radioactivity in the process. They had to put in hard work in order to discover radium. They had to pull away the tiny pieces of radium to eventually have pure radium. They did finally make the discovery. Because of their work in isolating radium, which took another three years for Curie to isolate a pure radium salt, they received the Nobel Prize in 1903 for physics. Over the years, radium was discovered to be able to be a treatment for cancer.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>https://theconversation.com/hunting-for-rare-isotopes-the-mysterious-radioactive-atomic-nuclei-that-will-be-in-tomorrows-technology-86177<br><br>Radioactive materials are used for many good things, despite there being a negative connotation with radioactivity. These beneficial things include medicine, irradiation, and within archaeology.  Henri Becquerel discovered natural radioactivity while trying to discover why uranium salts emit light when exposed to sunlight. This discovery resulted in a new era of physics, nuclear physics. He won the nobel prize in 1903. Scientists have made numerous discoveries about the atomic nuclei since then. The known atomic nuclei have many different elements, and each element on the periodic table belongs to different isotopes. Different isotopes, rare ones, have many special characteristics. These different nuclear properties make each rare isotope unique, and nuclear physicists have to design specialized experiments to study each one of them separately. Today, scientists are developing new techniques to discover more isotopes. Producing these rare isotopes is not easy and requires large machines and a vigorous process of trial and error. They not have detectors that can observe new nuclei and radiation and study their properties. They study much energy is released during the decaying process, how many different gamma rays are emitted and how energy is shared between them. Through a machine named SuN, they are able to experiment with rare isotopes and examine these characteristics. There are many discoveries that have been made of the years thanks to this kind of technology and no one knows when the next groundbreaking isotope will be discovered.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>https://theconversation.com/thunderstorms-create-radioactivity-scientists-discover-87946<br><br>New studies have shown that thunderstorms can cause radioactivity by triggering nuclear reactions.  There is a source of radiation in the atmosphere which is dubbed "cosmic" rays. The article details the discovery of cosmic rays through a hot air balloon experiment. Cosmic rays can come from the sun or from supernovas, and are made up of charged particles.The article discusses how radiocarbon dating works, the presence of neutrons is what makes it possible. Studies today are trying to find neutrons created by thunderstorms, though they are not definitive. The new studies have been using byproducts of nuclear reactions to achieve better results.</div>]]></description>

Thousands have not been able to return home because of the ongoing cleanup. The removal of the fuel rods is a big milestone in the radioactive waste cleanup, though they have over a thousand fuel to go. Even at that, the third reactor should only take two years to cleanup, and workers are doing removal underwater to reduce and prevent radiation leaks, to which they are vulnerable to if an earthquake should happen again. <br><br></div>]]></description>

Even with the given research, evidence and facts of the impacts of radium on the human body, there were people who drank the energy drinks that did in fact contain radium. This caused long term health effects for any whom became addicted. One, who died, was put in a lead lined coffin to prevent radiation leaks, because the radiation goes to the bone. The energy drinks never became a health crisis because very few actually contained radium and those that did were very expensive. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>https://www.wired.com/story/air-pollution-dementia/<br><br>Scientists are beginning to link air pollution to dementia. Studies suggest that air pollution is more dangerous for the human body than previously thought, and the evidence is there. Some even believe it is indeed conclusive. Multiple studies suggest living closer to polluted areas increased risks of Alzheimer’s disease. A study in the U.S. found that the EPA's air pollution restrictions decreased the amount of people who developed these kinds of diseases.  It is important for us to improve the quality of our air, because it is not easy to tell when we are breathing dirty air. </div>]]></description>

This could make it harder in the long run to combat climate change and reduce pollution. These changes are said to be done to eliminate inconsistencies in assessing regulations. It is said that the EPA has been inconsistent in the past, overestimating or underestimating costs and benefits. Trump has continued to try and discount the health benefits and environmental regulations. This could bind future administrations until it could be rewritten. The EPA has already started to consider drawing back on numerous regulations in regards to mercury levels, scientific data that can be used to lead regulations, etc. This is all done to ensure that the regulations are fair, reasonable, feasible, etc. The trump administration wants to reduce costs by trying to eliminate overestimated costs based on benefits. </div>]]></description>

Redlining is quite old and was banned, but even today the impacts are still very relevant. Red-lining previous increased separation of color of skin and class.  The study concluded that people in these high-risk areas went to the emergency room for asthma related problems twice as much as other areas.  They acknowledge that pollution isn't the only factor. The everyday stresses of living in a high-risk neighborhood is also a contributing factor.  We can decrease air pollution, but the fact that they are poor neighborhoods without as many social assets is the underlying problem. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>https://www.eriereader.com/article/breathing-difficulties<br><br>Erie Coke produced a misleading report which indicated they have some of the cleanest air quality. In reality, the report was very misleading and the air quality monitors they have, have been shown to not track or detect all potential air pollutions in the area. This is added on to the fact that they do not have a lot of monitors in various areas in the first place. Furthermore, they have been violating EPA air pollution regulations in the past. The article explains the negative effects air pollution has on mental health, performance, motivation, etc to emphasize the importance of the situation Erie coke is in regarding the air pollutions standards they are violating.  There are many unresolved violations for Erie Coke. They have been at the top of emitting various pollutants in 2017. </div>]]></description>

The equipment is intended to prevent ethylene emissions from escaping into the surrounding neighborhoods, which is used to sterilize medical equipment.  The pollution of this has been shown to be responsible for high cancer risks.  </div>]]></description>

The biggest lost of the year was in Brazil. Rainforests are crucial to combatting climate change because they store carbon dioxide in them, so keeping them safe is severely important for the climate. This loss of trees is mainly due to agriculture, mining, infrastructure development and fires that have intensified due to global warming. The total amount of rainforest tree cover loss last year amounted to be the four biggest loss since 2001.</div>]]></description>

The main reasons for deforestation can be linked to palm oil, wood and paper based products, soy, and cattle farming.          <description><![CDATA[<div>https://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/41227/20190524/study-predicts-shift-to-smaller-animals-over-next-century.htm<br><br>It is predicted that the world will shift into a move to small birds and mammals in the next 100 years. This is due to the fact that in recent years, given the dramatic change habitats due to human activity, small insects and species that can adapt to a wide variety of environments have been thriving. Over the next century it is predicted that some mammals and birds will be filtered out and go extinct in favor of these other species. Though this would normally be seen as a negative, researchers suggest that it will help prepare conservation methods and techniques since the extinction process in not at random, rather it is selective. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/articles/entry/learning-from-the-camp-fire-paradise/<br><br>The Camp Fire burned in California in November of last year, killing some older residents  and destroying and damaging many structures, buildings, and homes. This was the deadliest wildfire in California history. Even after six months, city water is still unavailable. There are only a handful of has stations and food stores which are in operation today.  Camp Fire is now the largest hazardous material cleanup site in all of California. The damage is very extensive. Weather and extreme conditions are the cause of large forest fires, contrary to the current politicians beliefs under the trump administration. We need to lessen the dependency on logging in order to prevent a future event like Camp Fire. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/articles/entry/philippines-dwarf-buffalo-tamaraw-conservation<br><br>Decades of human activity including deforestation due to population growth and advancements have caused this species to decline significantly. The habitats of the tamaraw have been destroyed, and as more livestock appeared as human population increased, it allowed more diseases to spread to the tamaraw. The population of this species has decreased from 10,000 about a century ago to today being around 500 left.  The locals of the area hold the species to a high cultural significance. The animal has been the face of many teams, sports, and mascots for other various groups. Now, people have gathered to take an action plan to help the species from becoming extinct. They have previously succeeded before in increasing the population, so the success of this group again is not as unlikely as some may think. Many people are eager to work on conservation for the species. </div>]]></description>
