But it wasn't always like that, Mario was born on the 30th of October 1954 into a rather average family somewhat struggling to get by, he was the eldest out of his 6 siblings with his father being a fulltime businessman and his mother who was taking care of the children fulltime actually inspired Mario to pursue photography or rather, fashion photography. Mario actually credits his mother to this day for preparing him for his illustrious photography career.

He moved to London in 1976 to focus on his career in fashion photography, and his clients soon included such fashion houses as Gucci, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent and publications including Vogue, Vanity Fair, and W. Testino’s bright, sharp style of photography put an end to the fashion industry's love affair with “heroin chic” and the accompanying dark, murky images that dominated magazine pages in the early 1990s.

In October 2016, Testino opened the Parques Teresita playpark in association with Natalia Vodianova’s Naked Heart Foundation, the Provincial Municipality of Urubamba. Located in Cusco, Perú, Parques Teresita is named in memory of Testino’s late mother. The second Parques Teresita was opened in January 2019 in Ayacucho, at the Municipality of Huamanga. A third park was opened in March 2023 in Alto Selva Alegre, in Arequipa. It is estimated that the first two parks have impacted over 20 thousand families.

And not only that, he's also donated a lot of his earnings to charity which awarded him the Tiradentes medal for exceptional public service in 2007 and in 2010 he was appointed one of the highest honours in his native country, The Grand Cross rank of the Order of Merit of Peru for Distinguished Services.
