         <description><![CDATA[<p>Hitler and the Nazi party passed laws that established the foundation for the Holocaust. They vocalized their feelings about race legally - and how Jewish people should be considered inferior. These laws caused Jewish people in Germany to have their citizenship taken away along with their political power to vote. The Nazis made them isolated from society.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Kristallnacht, meaning the Night of Broken Glass, refers to the night where the Nazi's destroyed Jewish homes, synagogues, and Jewish-owned businesses. The broken glass from the vandalism laid in the streets, thus creating the name.</p>]]></description>

         <title>December 7, 1941: Attack on Pearl Harbor</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>As Japan was growing more powerful, they needed the resources that America could provide. When we denied them this, they attacked one of our military bases, Pearl Harbor, on the Hawaiian Islands. They sent the Kamikaze (suicide planes) to destroy as many ships and kill as many people as possible. It killed about 3,500 people and destroyed 16 ships.</p>]]></description>

         <title>June 4-7, 1942: Battle of Midway</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>This was another air battle between the U.S. and Japan. The U.S. won this battle by preparing for it before it happened - they heard communication codes and became aware of the threat. After the initial attack, they went to go to battle. They won this battle and it is a vital turning point war. It stopped Japan from growing in the Pacific.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Soviet Forces (Red Army) opened the gates to Auschwitz on January 27th. The silence of the camp made the Red Army think nobody was there, but soon they realized the thousands of people who were imprisoned, left to die by the secret police (in attempt to keep themselves from punishment).</p>]]></description>

         <title>August 6 &amp; 9, 1945: Atomic Bombs dropped on Japan</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Hiroshima and Nagasaki were left in ruins after the U.S. dropped the atomic bombs. These events were the first time atomic bombs were used against humans - and around 200,000 people were killed. While this did lead to the end of the war, the morality of this decision is still questioned.</p>]]></description>

         <title>September 2, 1945: Japan Surrenders</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>To end the war, the Japanese representatives signed the Instrument of Surrender (which was created by the war department and approved by President Truman). This officially ended the war and celebrations broke out all across the United States. </p>]]></description>
