Reading Debrief 02/18/2020 by Matthew Sylvester

Type and post your responses to the reading debrief on this wall. Put your name at the end of your post.

Q1: Elbow addresses the reader directly by using the second-person pronoun “you”. Why would he choose to address the reader directly? How does this impact his message?
Q2: What is Elbow’s main argument? How do you compare it with Richard Marius’s ideas in “Writing Drafts?”

Q2: Elbow's main argument is that it is acceptable to feel desperate when you experience writer's block. As long as you are actively writing and producing anything, you can still deduce from the jumble of words more concise ideas. In Marius's article about writing drafts, he also explains a method of organizing your ideas and cutting down the fluff. But contrastingly, he does not precisely say that you can write things such as utterances or love/hate poems because he chooses to explain a myriad of different techniques. Elbow allows more freedom in his instruction since he really only explains two activities in his "desperation writing" approach.
