Genovese screamed out "Oh my God, he stabbed me! Help me!" - 38 people witnessed the stabbing yet did nothing but call out.     • People took longer to help the drunk than the ill man. 
      • 17% of cane trials took longer than 70 seconds
      • 83% of drunk trials took longer than 70 seconds.  
  • In 21/103 cases, bystanders moved away from the critical area.

    • Cane conditions - black and white victims were equally likely to be helped. 
    • Drunk conditions - black victims were less likely to receive help. 
      • people were more likely to help the victim if they were the same race. 
    Effect of Modelling:  The intervention took place after 70 and 150 seconds. In 9 cases passengers helped after 70 seconds but in only 3 cases did passengers help after 150 seconds.
    Number of Bystanders: The results from the trial showed that when more people were present people were more likely to help - thus showing no sign of diffusion of responsibility.

    The study had a high reliability as the inter-rate reliability could be checked as well as the test-retest reliability being high as the experiment took place 103 times.
    The population  validity is low as can only be generalised to new york.
