I can infer that there was insufficient food to feed themselves and people needed to work in more jobs to earn money to buy more food for themselves.
From source 31 TB pg 39, it says that "Our food sources were running Low. There was this idea that somebody would have to find a job...Being in government service, I was given additional food. This increased our supplies at home."
This shows that they had not enough food for themselves and their family and needed to work to earn or get food from the Japanese.

-Sin Yee

From all the sources, we can infer that the people living in Singapore was living a very tough life during Japanese occupation. Food was scarce as most of the food or goods were sent to the Japanese army because they had war in other countries so they needed resources for war. Therefore, food was rationed every month. If the Japanese soldier liked you, you will get more food but if u were not liked, food will be lesser for you. People had to find more jobs to work for so that they can earn more money to purchase goods or food in the black market as they were sold at a higher price there. They also used whatever they had to make more food for their families so that they can survive. During Japanese occupation, schools were also disrupted but after the Japanese reopened the schools, the students were forced to study everything they had from English to Japanese as the japanese wanted to promote Japanese culture. They also taught propagandas in their lessons about how ‘NICE’ the Japanese were. The working conditions were made hard for the POWs, which were the British soldiers/Europeans that were captured during the occupation. They were ordered to do menial tasks and so of them even died due the heat, poor sanitation at the place they worked at and malnutrition, but before Japanese occupation, they were regarded very highly but those non-european people in Singapore. Although, the occupation was harsh, there were still places where the people in Singapore can enjoy themselves like the amusement parks that were built before occupation but did not get closed down during the occupation.

From this, we can see that although the lives of the people were very hard, they needed to obey the Japanese all the time and they lived their lives in fear during Japanese occupation, but some also enjoyed themselves in the amusement parks built.
