Academic:   Great for 5th grade with many possible applications. Could read the book for a Morning Meeting each child does one page. Research, essay, poetry possibilities connecting to certain pages. Connects to history. The repeated line/chorus/refrain, "We came to America. Every color, race, and religion. From every country in the world."

Social/Emotional:   Short, beautiful, powerful text on immigration. Simple but complex. Connects to our social values of respecting others and wanting to know more about other cultures. Connect to a Mindfulness curriculum. Grade 4 "One" study - "We're one but we're not the same. We need to carry each other." Windows and Mirrors activity where students pick a page where they feel windows or mirrors.

It provides a truthful look at this history. It could promote conversations about fairness, freedom, equality.  It might be interesting to begin with a simple question like, "How did this book make you feel?" or "What did you notice in the pictures of this book?" Otherwise, it would be so easy to lead children with our own, more complex and experienced ideas. 
Connections could be made to writing units of poetry. In 3rd grade, it would be easy to make connections to the mistreatment of Native Americans in our country's history.
