A — Your oral shows satisfactory knowledge and understanding of the works in relation to the global issue. While you make an attempt to link Ngugi's work to the global issue, you do not do the same for Gado's work. 5 

B — your oral showcases good analysis of authorial choices. However, you need to be thorough. For example, an analysis of juxtaposition should thoroughly explore parallel elements. Symbolism, on the other hand, should involve a clear identification of a symbol and its meaning.  6

C — Your oral shows adequate use of organizational structures. You need to be careful about your choice of transitions across texts. For example, there is a premature use of the transition 'in conclusion'. What's more, the conclusion itself is rushed and incomplete. 5  

D — Your use of language shows competence. However, you should be careful to avoid fillers in your oral. Additionally, you need to consciously make language choices to enhance your delivery. 7

Reflection on the first oral

I need to improve on my use of language by avoid use of fillers and using connectors to improve the flow of words within the oral as well as to keep the listener engaged. Work on staying within the time limit as well as avoiding rushing to finish.

- Use of proper and distinct transitions to show the progression of ideas.

- Be more comprehensive in your interpretation

- One technique in a paragraph with multiple examples.

June 2024 Exam reflection

In the June exam I attained a 6, which was a decent performance although I think I could've done better. Throughout my response from what I remember, I was not very confident in my points thus being over descriptive. I honestly thought my performance would be worse as I struggled to analyze the text thoroughly, as well as finding the deeper meaning and message that the text was trying to put across.

• Vary sentence structure - work on improving this as it has been a recurring problem throughout all my paper 1 responses (Work on by learning new and varied transitions and language)

• Ensure that all your arguments are thorough yet precise too aligning with the topic sentence for the paragraph. Some arguments are strong while others tend to be speculative. Ensure that across the board that the guiding question is being answered.

November 2024 Exam reflection (14/20)

I got a 6 which was decent although certain improvements could have pushed my grade much higher.

I must vary my sentence structure to push my Criterion D grade to a 4.

I also need to be more thorough when analysing my points and more careful in identifying techniques and explaining their purpose and effect.

• When citing and/or quoting examples avoid mentioning evidence that is not directly related to the point and analysis.

• Once again focus on broader implications of techniques within the text (so what?)

Criterion B (Analysis and evaluation)

• Read literary techniques to gain knowledge on a variety of techniques.

• Work on thorough analysis but concise as well.

• Avoid being overly descriptive and redundancy when analyzing and evaluating.

• Avoid speculation.

• Good balance of both texts although work on improving your cohesiveness of paragraphs.

• Ensure to compare and contrast will lose marks if one of the two is missing.

Reflection for the third paper 2 (June exam feedback), Got a 5 :(

1. Work on the balanced treatment of both texts

2. Knowledge of the texts was okay although a lot of my analysis and points did not answer the guiding questions thus rendering them irrelevant, so work on ensuring all points and arguments made directly answer the question chosen.

3. Once again, work on sentence structure - employ better use of sentence starters, connectors and analytical verbs.

Got a 6 very happy about my response.

Should work on providing more specific and detailed examples or quotes if possible, so that my analysis is more convincing.

Should be much more thorough when analysing my evidence and techniques.

Identify and frame a global issue related to the extract and editorial cartoon. Briefly justify your choice. This entry should be included under the Individual oral column in your portfolio.

GLOBAL ISSUE - Politics, power, justice.

Within both extracts (in purple hibiscus and in the editorial cartoon) we observe instances of power imbalance. Within purple hibiscus, papa/Eugene uses his power abusively against his family specifically mama in this instance, as a means of control. His family is unable to retaliate in this extract because of the fear that papa has instilled in them as an authoritative figure. Whilst in abuse playbook, we witness a similar situation whereby the lady faces injustice due to the man's high status, he is famous thus in a sense giving him more power than her. Just like in purple hibiscus the man then proceeds to abuse the power he has, as he cannot be held accountable for his actions leading to the power imbalance between him and the lady.
