I believe Taylor Branch’s claim is largely false. America is most certainly not facing all the same issues it was at the end of Dr. King’s life. Yes, racism and some forms of discrimination still exist in certain pockets of society, but it is nowhere remotely near the severity it was in Dr. King’s time. Our country has improved leaps and bounds in terms of promoting equality for all people. I believe that Dr. King would firstly be proud of the progress America has made. There are still issues in our country that need to be fixed, but we’ve largely created an all-inclusive society. When Branch says, “We should have listened to him then”, I don’t really understand what she means. The president did listen to him by signing desegregation laws. MLK sparked a cultural revolution of being inclusive and not viewing others differently because of their race. My question is, do you think America is dividing itself today on things like political beliefs similar to how it was divided on race back then?

I also disagree with Branch's claim. I completely agree that we are certainly not facing the same issues we were during King's time. Another thing I thought of that is related to this is the differences between MLK and Coates' experiences. MLK talks about how he had to tell his daughter that she couldn't go to the new amusement park that was being advertised on TV, because it was too dangerous. Although Coates has experienced things like this and has had fear for his sons life, I just don't think it's the same and to that severity either.
