The Battle of Bosworth Field (1485) marked the end of the Wars of the Roses, the dynastic conflict between the Houses of York and Lancaster for the English throne. In this battle, Richard III, the last king of the York dynasty, was defeated and killed by Henry Tudor, who became king as Henry VII.

To consolidate peace, Henry married Elizabeth of York, uniting the two rival houses and creating a new symbol of harmony and stability: the Tudor rose, which combined the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York.
