The Positives

The environment was comfortable. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. Clearly the experience was memorable.
The 4 food samples and wine testing was most likely much more effective than simply listing what types of wines would go with what types of foods/flavors.
The fact that there were polls taken on what combinations people preferred have relevance. The quote"there may be a preferred coupling, wine preference is individual and there was nothing wrong with our votes" was proven at that time. This strategy was effective in illustrating that fact, by demonstrating it.
When it came time to review for the test, I believe the instructor student interaction was good. Asking questions rather than non-stop lecturing is more effective Andragogy. I would also say that the fact that the instructor did not have them reading from a textbook like kids, showed she understood adult learning. There was a good engagement assuming the students were self motivated to learn.

What a great learning environment.....Who paid for the wine and 4 types of snacks? This sounds great, wondering if the school, company, or the instructor paid? Perhaps the students brought something individual like a pot luck.
Sometimes we are limited by financial and other factors that cannot be easily overcome.

What was the learning objective?
Although it doesn't specify that it did not happen, I do not see where the instructor explains why they were tasting the wine along with the 4 snacks. Maybe the reason was clear, however based on the reading on how adults learn, I feel the days objective could have been clearly stated. Possibly starting out the class by asking the students which wines would go with; beef jerky, chocolate, etc. Then after polling them, explaining that the reason you are about to wine test with those snacks is to prove it is individual preference. The students may be expected to suggest wine types to customers. I believe this was the objective, to build a knowledge for what wines to recommend with different meals, although it was never stated, so I cannot be sure.

What can we learn from this?

I believe the out of the box non traditional teaching was very effective and we can learn from it. Sometimes it can be easy to get in the routine of a lecture to teach the students. Why lecture on something when we can actually live it and prove it? No need to give examples for this lesson, the activity itself did the teaching. This however would only work with adults, assuming:
They are internally self motivated
They have a desire to learn the information
They understand why they need to learn the information
They have life experience
