This film takes place in present day Mexico. Most of the film takes places during Dia de los Muertos. Dias de los Muertos is shown as a day where families celebrate their deceased loved ones. The movie follows a boy name Miguel who eventually ends up in the Land of the Dead. Early on viewers learn about Miguel's love for music. They also see that Miguel has to play music in secrete. This is because Mama Imelda (Miguel's great-great grandmother) has banned music from her family. When she was a young adult, her love left her to pursue his music career. This left her sad and alone. Mama Imelda never wanted to hear music again, because it brought back too many bad memories. Knowing this, Miguel continued to hide his passion for music, which caused him to be sad and not truly understand what he was supposed to do in life. But, his love for music was so strong that he wanted to show his talents at a talent show. Miguel took a guitar belonging to the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Miguel's musical idol). When he played the guitar he was transported into the Land of the Dead. This is where Miguel met a deceased man named Hector. Hector became Miguel's guide through the Land of the Dead. Upon following Hector and meeting Ernesto de la Cruz, Miguel learned that Hector was actually his great-great grandfather the whole time. Hector had been wronged by Ernesto who had stolen all of Hector's music. Ernesto became famous while Hector lost his family and his life. And since music was banned in Miguel's family, the memory of Hector was also lost. He was forgotten about. After finding out all this information, Miguel sings a song to trigger Mama Coco (Hector's daughter) memory of Hector and Miguel returns to the real world. At the end, music was no longer banned in Miguel's family and the memory of his great-great grandfather lived on.
