Dear Thanh, 

 

How are you doing? I was very happy when I got a letter from you. It has been 3 three years since the last time we met. We have spent a wonderful time together at Cambridge University. I really miss you.

 

You ask me how I will spend my days off from work. Actually, I and my boyfriend, David, gonna go to Vietnam for our vacation. We gonna depart on 20th January. Would you recommend some places that are excellent for travelling in Vietnam?

DIALOGUE

 

 

 

Hotel:      Good afternoon. Welcome to Hoang Thu Hotel. How may I help you?

David:     I have a reservation for today. It's under the name of David.

Hotel:      Yes, Mr. David, we've reserved a double room for you with a front balcony for 3 days. Is that correct?

David:     Yes, it is.

Alli:          Hmm. Ok, so what room are we in?

Hotel:      Room 203. Here is your key. To get to your room, take the elevator on the right up to the second floor and  your room will be on the left hand side. A bellboy will bring your bags up shortly.

Alli:          Wonderful! Thanks.

Hotel:      You’re welcome, sir. Enjoy your stay at Hoang Thu Hotel.

Alli: Hi Thanh, Chúc Mừng Năm Mới! 

 

Thanh, long time no see. I miss you so much. How are you doing?

 

Thanh: Im doing very well. How about you? You look so good. Are you now prettier than at university?

 

Alli: Yeah, I think so. LOL

 

Hòa: Wow, it's great seeing you,  How long has it been? It must be more than 3 years. How are you?

 

Thanh: Yeah, great. How about you.....Welcome to my house. This is younger sister, Thi.

 

Hòa: Wow, it's great seeing you!  How long has it been? It must be more than 3 years. How are you?

 

Tiên + Hòa: hello Thi, nice to see you./Beo: nice to see you

 

o. (LOL) I bring some wine for you.

 

Thanh: Oh, you shouldn't have. This is in Vietnam, you don't have to do that.

 

David: Oh, I see.

 

 

 

(vào nhà gọi mẹ)

 

Thanh: This is my Mom.

 

Mom: Hi. My name is Nu. How are you? I'm fine. Thank you. Anh you? (nói liền mach_vuivui_dở dở)

 

Alli+ David: Xin Chào. Tôi khỏe. Nice to meet you.

 

Mom: Come here, come here, sit down.

 

Thanh: Mẹ người ta không có quen vậy đâu.

 

Mom: Oh, sorry sorry

 

Alli + David: It's ok. Never mind.

 

Thanh: You know, in Vietnam, when people want to express their hospitality, they will do that, you know grab hand, or sth like that.

 

David: Oh, I got it. It seems to have many things to get accustomed to, uh?

 

Mom: drink! drink! (đưa ly nước cho 2 bạn nước ngoài)

 

(Mom: Thôi ngồi chơi, tự nhiên nha mấy đứa! Mẹ xuống chuẩn bị đồ ăn chút nha!)

 

Alli: What a beautiful house!

 

David: How gorgeous they are!  What are they?

 

Thanh: I don't know what it is called in English. In Vietnamese, it is called Địa Lan. It is used to........during Tet holiday. After everything in their house is in order, they go to the nearby flower market to buy flowering branches of blossoms to decorate the house.

David: How long does Tet last?

Beo: about seven days.

Alli: Our New Year celebrations last one day only. The first of January.

David: We usually gather around at parks or squares for counting down of the new year. People may go out for a walk or a meal after that. What do you usually do in Tet holiday?

Beo: In Vietnam every family will get together to have big meals, decorate Tet trees and eat Tet food to welcome the new year .Tet is the occasion for Vietnamese to express their respect and remembrance for their ancestors as well as welcoming the New Year with their beloved family members. In the new year eve, we usually stay at home to welcome the new year with our fammily.

 

Alli: Oh, that's interesting. On the contrary, In England, as soon as the clock in the midnight rings twelve, we present in the party, on the road, in the house hoot, shout, whistle, and create noise to mark the arrival of the New Year. It is followed by greeting everyone around by hugs and kisses. A drinking toast is raised by everyone in concert to officially get into the celebration grove.

 

Thanh: And you know, we also have the custom of “picking buds”  at nearby pagodas for luck, health and happiness.

 

The western people also have no time to “spring travel” and roam in the colorful streets. Some countries like Vietnam have the custom of “picking buds” by go for long famous pagodas for their families in the whole year. Overall, the Eastern nations seem to have many traditional and ancient customs in New Year occasion which are very special and impressed but each one has its own meaning and origin.

To make it easier, you can imagine Tet as a combination of Christmas and New Year: every family will get together to have big meals, decorate Tet trees and eat Tet food but to welcome the new year 

 

Alli: oh, 

 

David:         What do you do, Thi?

 

Thi:             I am a student. I major in English.

 

David:         That's why your English pretty well.

 

(David nhìn đồng hồ, Thanh cũng nhìn đồng hồ tường..)

 

Thanh:        Let's celerbrate!

 

Thi:             Chị không đợi anh Minh hả?

 

Alli:            What's up?

 

Thi:             We are waiting for one of our friend. Perhaps he is comming. (nhấn cuông). Here he comes. Let me open the door.

 

(David+ Alli xì xà xì nồ)

 

Alli:            It's too late (Hòa biểu hiện cái mặt zui zui)

 

Minh:          Hello, hello cả nhà. Happy new year! Năm mới phát tài chưa Cô. (2 người bắt tay, Minh 2 tay. mom 1 tay)

 

Mom:          Uh cô cám ơn! Cô lì xi con nè!

Thanh: Tới trễ dậy ba?

Minh: Bận đi chúc tết

 

Minh:   Con lớn rồi mà cô lì xì cho con nữa hả? hihi

 

Mom:               Tết nhất mà con!

 

 

 

 

Alli:                 What’s he on about?

 

David:         I guess that’s a lucky money. 

 

Alli:            How do you know?

 

David:         I knew it by chance when visiting China last year. 

 

Beo:        Yeah, that’s lucky money. It’s commonly given to kids from their parents, grandparents, and others as Vietnamese New Year gifts. Vietnamese people love the color red, and regard red as the symbol of energy, happiness and good luck. A red envelope with some new notes carries Vietnamese’ hope for children to “eat more, grow rapidly”, to study well and to have a delightful year ahead. It is a traditional way to wish good luck and share blessings!

 

David: That's sounds interesting!

Alli: Great! 

 

 

 

 

Thanh:        Oh, I forgot. Let's get to know each other. This is Minh, my high school friend. (Quay sang 2 ng ngoại quốc). Minh, this is David and Alli. I studied with them when I was at university. 

 

David and Alli: Hello, nice to meet you

Minh: (làm lố) Nice to meet you.  Ôm hun thắm thiết nhảm nhí

Alli: né tránh, biểu hiện rõ không thích.

David: bắt tay nhưng Minh lại gật đầu

Mom: Xuống ăn cơm đi con

Thanh: Dạ. 

Thanh: Everything is ready. Let's go to the dining room. 

David, ALli: Perfect!

David: I can't wait to taste the Vietnamese traditional food

Mom: Ăn. Ăn đi mấy đứa! Eat, eat!

Thanh: Help yourself1

David: Thank you!

Alli: Cảm ơn Cảm ơn

 

Ngỡ ngàng.  ăn đũa khó khăn, nhìn nguoi khác cầm đũa -> khó

Thanh: Oh, maybe you are not used to eating with chopsticks. Let me bring you forks and knives?

(David and Alli đồng ý, thanh đi lấy nĩa dao)

Thanh (nhìn Alli và David): You two should try some Bánh chưng. It really special.

Alli: Bánh chưng? What is it?

Beo:  Bánh chưng is a traditional Vietnamese rice cake eaten during Tet holiday. It's made from glutinous rice, mung beans, pork and other ingredients and takes more than 12 hours. On tết holiday, one of the national dishes of Vietnam, in addition to chả giò and phở.

David: Oh, it tastes rather good.

Mẹ: (nói không sành) eat it with củ kiệu (nói xong gắp vào chén cho 2 người Tây)

Beo: (khều mẹ) họ kị việc gắp thức ăn cho ng khác bằng đũa của mình lắm. (mẹ sorry sorry)(cho cháu ăn)

Beo: Don't take it to heart! We often share foods to our guests to make them feel at home.
