My first task is to create a short film which is presented on a zoom call. After much consideration I have decided to do a horror/thriller about a new couple who are chatting on video call after a date when third person joins and begins sending photos which get increasingly closer to one of their apartments until they eventually turn their camera on to reveal that they are now in the room with one of them.

Anonymous - Final Film & Reflection

Overall, I am really pleased with how my 'ZOOMED' short film transpired. There were multiple strengths but also certain limitations during the production and pre production of this project.

- Positives

I believe that the way we portrayed the zoom call was successful. We decided to screen record 'Caleb's' entire desktop screen using OBS screen record, doing this makes the 'zoom' aspect of the film feel much more authentic as if this could be a real zoom call which adds to the thriller aspect to the film. Also, you can physically see the mouse cursor moving around and clicking on things like the photos that anonymous is sending in, this was done in a similar way in the 2018 mystery/thriller 'Searching' which I researched earlier.

Secondly, I believe that the way we decided to do the ending was effective, this is because the throughout the entire film the anonymous character isn't revealed to the audience and they never turn their camera on when entering the zoom call, the suspense builds and builds until the moment when anonymous finally turns their camera on to reveal that he's in the room with James and is inevitably going to be killed by anonymous before it cuts to black, it's a big shock to the audience and the characters in the story.

In addition, I also thought that the editing really enhanced the final film. I colour graded the anonymous POV shots to look darker and shadowy to help creates the feeling that this character is the antagonist of the story. This is further re-enforced by the sound effects used because I decided to use sound effects of subtle breathing for the POV shots which puts the audience on edge and is unsettling. The music used also helps to build tension and starts off quiet and progressively get more intense as anonymous gets closer to James.

- Negative

The first negative I can think of would be the acting because myself and Tanis had to act in the film as Caleb & James and a lot production time was spend re-shooting the zoom call scenes because we kept breaking character and laughing which set us back massively, so next time we would consider reaching out and working with actors from the performing arts BA degree.

We should have also included more hints of Caleb and James' relationship in the film because when we showed the finished film to people, some said that they seemed more like friends so next time we would include some lines of dialog where they're complimenting each other or talking to each other on a deeper level.

After watching the 2018 mystery/thriller called searching, I think it's really unique in the way the it presents itself because the entire film is seen through the dads computer screen. This makes you feel more connected to the story because you're seeing everything that he is. I could potentially do a similar thing in my own zoom film by using a screen recording software which would show my entire desktop which would give it that authentic feel and could make my thriller film feel more real.

This film has showed how hard it can be to lose a family member, and the affects of this on the rest of the family. I have received positive feedback from other people stating that watching this film was emotional, however neccessary as some of them were able to relate to the experience, and this film has brought them comfort and allowed them to understand the complexity of their own emotions when grieving. Overall a sense of community can be extremely healing for most people.

- Positives

The use of music, videos, and photography has made this video very emotional, as well as interesting, therefore although it was quite long, the audience was kept interested in the story and continued to watch.

The questions I have asked were open ended and therefore has allowed the individuals taking part to open up about their experience.

The backdrop, lighting and the setting of the interview matched the purpose of this film and therefore have effectively evoked the feelings of sadness in the audience.

Emotive tracks were used throughout this film during the emotional parts, and lighthearted tracks for the more funny stories. I decided to chose music to fit with what was being talked about on screen. I have done this to improve our audience's understanding of the narrative within the film, and to boost their emotional response to the visuals on screen and therefore help them interpret the specific emotions that are being inferred.

- Negatives

At the time of making this video I did not have many videos of my grandad, and I think these would make the pacing of the video better. This can also be improved by making the film shorter.

The amount and type of equipment I had, as well as the actors were limited therefore I had to make do with what I had.

I had to fill in for my grandma as an interviewee because it would have been too upsetting for her to talk on camera. It would have made the film more impactful/emotional if she featured in the film.

Initially, I had the idea of creating a documentary around mental health, but after some thought, I decided to go for a narrative piece around suicide awareness. This was because I had a story/script that I was really passionate about and I much prefer creating a narrative short film as apposed to a documentary.

im fine - Final Film & Reflection

My final project was a short film based around suicide awareness. The film starts out with the main character Adam, alone and bored in his flat, he then decides to invite his mate Lewis round for a couple beers to cheer him up, Adam talks about his problems and how he’s feeling but when Adam asks Lewis how he is, Lewis simply responds saying "I’m fine" and brushes the question off. At the end of the film Adam receives a call from Lewis’ girlfriend revealing at Lewis killed himself the night before. This is the big twist of the film because you would have expected Adam to be the one would to do that but I really wanted to get across that even individuals that don't display any signs of melancholy can commit suicide because they can appear fine on the surface but may be struggling inside.

One thing that I liked in the film was the way in which it was shot using a range of different camera angles and the fact that I filmed some scenes multiple times from different angles so when it came to editing I could cut from a medium close up to a close up to make it more dynamic and interesting to watch for the viewer. The music complimented the mood of the scenes, for example in the scene where the characters are playing a video game I used upbeat music to facilitate the energy of the game. Furthermore, filming the actors physically playing the game, creates a sense authenticity to the film. In addition, I heightened the ambient background noises such as the dripping tap to signify the loneliness felt by the character. I thought the overall pacing was effective as I tried to keep the editing tight and not have any unnecessary shots in the final film that didn't serve the story/plot in some way. I feel like my organisational skills were successful because I had my shot list pre prepared before production so I had a vision of the finished piece hence, I was able to follow along with the shot list therefore making production more efficient.

Moving into some of the negatives, unfortunately I ran into some audio issues when uploading my footage onto premiere pro. There was interference on the sound which I had to alter by adding a denoise audio effect to stabilise the sound, however, this was detrimental to the uneven noise levels of some of the scenes. Moreover, my inexperience in using the DVX 200 camera caused delays in production as I needed to become accustomed to and familiarise myself with the camera functions. In the future, I would like to utilise the acting talents of the performing arts department to better enhance the emotional impact of the film.

Overall, I am happy with what I have managed to achieve and I will learn from these negatives moving forward onto projects in the near future.

Looking through these websites on suicide helped me gain more understanding on the serious subject matter. They also have a lot of useful statistics which I could use in my film to get across how big of an issue suicide is. Finally, I could also link the appropriate helplines at the end of my film to help people that may have been affected by the film.

Edgar Wright is one of my favourite directors of all time and I am a huge fan of how he does quick, fast paced, close up shots for scenes that would normally be less interesting for the audience to watch like getting ready or moving locations. I would love to attempt something like this in my own short film.
