As an English teacher, I use my classes on (im)migrations especially to the US to tackle the paradox of the situation and help them debunk their preconceptions about the subject. My Euro class is definitely a welcoming space for our unaccompanied minors (MNA).

European weeks and days are a way for us to celebrate diversity through culture, music and food.

Honouring the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of all children through stories, events and art is vital. In several schools I have taught we have celebrated specific national days, held world food events, flag days and art competitions. I encourage the students in my class to add create images and words in their own languages for the displays.

My school collaborates with the association "Almería acoge", an association that works for the integration of the immigrant population. On the occasion of Family Day we were invited to participate in workshops on Moroccan culture with henna painting, introduction to Arabic calligraphy or tasting tea and pastries. Celebrating differences by learning about them is key to SEL. Throughout the year there are lessons and activities incorporated to the various festivals /events celebrated by our students worldwide.(St. Patricks Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Diwali, Ramadan etc) In educational projects they are encouraged to research and give a book report or a PowerPoint presentation on the country of their choice.

In my school there is not much ethnic differences, but we do a lot of workshops and individual conversations about accepting differences and emotional regulation. During this year, 5th grade students participated in my eTwinning project Developement of emocional inteligence in elementary school students.

We created a dance/musical collage representing the various ethnicities of Dobrogea, the region where we live: Turks, Tatars, Gypsies, Greeks, Lipovans, Macedonians. The students were dressed in traditional costumes of each ethnic group.
