         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Explanation:<br></strong>A.) <em>Basic Chemistry of Water</em><br>Two covalent bonds bind the two hydrogen atoms to the oxygen atom. Since these two covalent bonds are found within the water molecule, their location is intramolecular. <br><strong>Properties of Water</strong>:</div><ul><li>High Heat Capacity:</li></ul><div>Water can absorb a large amount of heat energy with a minimal change in temperature.</div><ul><li>High Heat of Vaporization:&nbsp;</li></ul><div>Water takes a large amount of heat energy to convert water from a liquid to a gas.</div><ul><li>High Surface Tension:</li></ul><div>Water has strong cohesion and holds water molecules together.</div><ul><li>Ice is Less Dense than Liquid Water</li></ul><div>Water molecules arrange themselves in a crystal lattice structure in which the average distance between molecules is greater than that of liquid water.</div><div><br>B.) <em>Acids and Bases</em><br>An acid (also known as a proton donor) is a substance that splits up in water and increases the hydrogen ion concentration of the solution. On the other hand, a base (sometimes called a proton acceptor) is a substance that splits up in water and increases the hydroxide ion concentration of the solution. <br><br>C.) <em>Buffers</em><br>Buffers are compounds which are capable of stabilizing the pH of a solution by combining with excess hydrogen ions or hydroxide ions. <br><br><strong>Examples</strong>:<br>What is the importance of the properties of water?<br>The high heat capacity of water helps to maintain a relatively stable internal temperature within organisms. Since water has a high heat of vaporization, water in the form of sweat is also an effective cooling agent in humans since the water absorbs a lot of body heat as it evaporates. Moreover, water's high surface tension helps to ensure that surfaces in organisms that must be kept moist in order to function properly will have a continuous layer of moisture over them. Lastly, since ice floats, it insulates the organisms living in the liquid water below from the extremely low temperatures in the air above. <br>What is considered a base and an acid on the pH scale? <br>On the pH scale, numbers 1-6 are considered acidic, whereas numbers 8-14 are considered basic. Number 7 is considered 'neutral'. <br>What is an example of a buffer?<br>An example of a buffer which helps to maintain the pH of the blood in humans is hemoglobin. <br><br><strong>So What?</strong><br>Water is important because since water is a universal solvent, it dissolves a great number of solutes and facilitates chemical reactions both outside of and in living organisms. The temperature of liquid water also rises and falls more slowly than that of most other liquids. This protects organisms from rapid temperature changes and helps them to maintain normal temperatures. Furthermore, buffers are very important to living organisms as well because all biochemical processes remain normal only when the pH stays close to 7.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
