As a new student beginning to become a school counselor, completing the School Counselor Competency Assessment has been an insightful experience. Reflecting on my self-assessment, I have identified areas where I feel confident and areas where I need to improve. I scored high in building collaborative relationships with teachers and administrators. I have had positive experiences working in teams and value the importance of a collaborative approach in promoting student success. I need to improve in data analysis for program planning and evaluation. While I understand the importance of using data to inform decisions, I recognize that my skills in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data need further development. I plan to seek additional training and practical experiences to enhance my proficiency. Surprising insight is how many leadership skills are intact in the role of a school counselor. I had yet to fully appreciate the extent to which school counselors are expected to lead initiatives, advocate for students, and mentor peers.
