Puritans originated from England during the 1500's. They came to America to practice religious freedom as well as to separate from the Roman Catholic Church. The reason behind their names , is due to the fact that they sought out to "purify" church and create stronger morals. The Puritans set sail for America around the 1630's , their first beginnings in America was not simple. They're strong morals drove them to be busy from dawn to dusk. One of their beliefs was that easy lives where creation of the devil. They would work on their beliefs and morals , it was also mandatory to attend church daily. Their purpose in coming to the New World was too and reform the church as well to separate from the Catholic Church.

“God In America.” PBS, Public Broadcasting Service, 11 Oct. 2010, www.pbs.org/godinamerica/people/puritans.html.

In one simple word what was important to the Puritans was, God. They believed that God had made a bond or a "unique covenant" with them and they had to follow through with it. They believed that by following his ways they would live happy and sinless lives. Not only this, but they also had extreme morals , that consisted of following and reading The Scriptures that God had "created" for them to follow. They expected that they should live a busy life that was committed and devoted to "gods plan" that was created for them.

Hayden, Kellie. “The Puritan Daily Life: Research Topic Ideas on Life as a Puritan in the Colonies.” Bright Hub Education, 13 Apr. 2015, www.brighthubeducation.com/history-homework-help/112142-daily-life-of-a-puritan-colonist/.

One important puritan was Peter Bulkeley. He was a minister and the founder of Concord. John Bunyan, another famous puritan, was responsible for a lot of the Pilgrim's' progress when they first got to America. Anne Brasdstreet was also a very important Puritan, as she was the first person to have her work published in the colonies.
“Anne Bradstreet; Puritan Wife & Mother.” Romans 5 - Matthew Henry's Bible Commentary (Concise) - Bible Commentary, www.christianity.com/church/church-history/timeline/1601-1700/anne-bradstreet-puritan-wife-and-mother-11630086.html.
Tim Challies. “The Puritans: John Bunyan.” Tim Challies, 5 Nov. 2016, www.challies.com/articles/the-puritans-john-bunyan/.

The purpose of these trials was to get rid of supposed witches. These trials began because of "possessed" girls accusing a few women of witchcraft and putting a curse on them. They established a court to put these women on trial and some were hung if convicted. Over the next few years, massive hysteria caused over 150 men, women, and children to be accused and put on trial for witchcraft.

History.com Editors "Salem Witch Trials"
A&E Television Networks 4 November 2011 https://www.history.com/topics/colonial-america/salem-witch-t

One literary work from a puritan was "Sinners in the Hands of God" written by Jonathan Edwards. It is a book aimed towards sinners claiming that they will be judged by God and the judging of God is the most fearful and painful thing. Another puritan work is John Smith's "The General History of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles". This text describes life of he and his comrades in Virginia. He depicts a terrible place with little food and Native American tribes harassing them. Another example of a puritan work is "Upon a Wasp Chilled with Cold Huswifery" by Edward Taylor. In this text, he gives an insight of his life as young child growing up in the war between Royalists and Puritans. He also illustrate what it was like to live under the regime of Oliver Cromwell.

“Edward Taylor: Upon a Wasp Chilled With Cold.” Teaching American History, teachingamericanhistory.org/religion-in-america/american-life/edward-taylor-wasp/.

“Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God by Edwards: Summary, Analysis & Metaphors.” Study.com, Study.com, study.com/academy/lesson/sinners-in-the-hands-of-an-angry-god-by-edwards-summary-analysis-metaphors.html.

Littlehale, Kristy. “The General History of Virginia Summary & Activities | Captain John Smith.” Storyboard That, Storyboard That, 19 Feb. 2016, www.storyboardthat.com/lesson-plans/the-general-history-of-virginia-by-john-smith.
