1775 - Water Frame

The Water Frame changed how we made things because it pushed the making of factories to make resources quicker with only needing water. Many factories were able to be built by rivers where most villages back in the 1700s were located.

1839 - Opium War

The Opium Wars had an extreme impact starting with the opium trade from England to China. Eventually, China’s Emperor was so sick of the Queen of England’s opium trade that he sent a letter calling her a hypocrite and started a war with England. They then proceeded to lose the war which caused multiple inputs of opium to enter their country and get 12 million of the people in China addicted to it.

1849 - Interview of John Birley

In the 1800s, a factory worker, John Birley was interviewed about his experience in the factory he worked in. In this interview, he talked about the treatment they experienced. He stated that he was beaten with sticks by one of the owner's sons Frank he would beat him against Birley's temples so much he would get knocked out. Birley even stated one time when he got pushed over by Frank he put his arm over his head for protection and Frank swung with all his might and broke Birley's elbow in the process. These working conditions were rough and horrific but to get a better life they needed to work in these harsh conditions.

1837 - Great Britain & Queen Victoria

In 1837, Queen Victoria became queen at only 18 years old. She brought Great Britain into the Golden Age, which made Great Britain the most powerful nation and controlled a quarter of the Earth’s surface. She continued to reign in Great Britain for 63 years.

1886 - Scramble For Africa

Africa discovered diamonds in 1867 and gold in 1886 this interested European people to colonize Africa. Not a single European country wanted to be left out of this race to get these materials from Africa. This led to the Berlin Conference, which would later decide Africa’s fate.

1899 - White Man's Burden

The White Man’s Burden was a belief that the people who were from Africa were wild, half-devil, and half-child. The imperialists lied, claiming that the reason they were colonizing Africa was to show pride, stop the terror, make a profit, and take as many resources as they could find.
