A residency, or transitional program is an after-graduation program that helps better prepare new graduate nurses for the clinical setting. The transitional programs increase the new nurses’ self confidence and makes them more likely to become leaders in their nursing careers.

One of the most important values to a residency program is confidence. You gain a new found confidence in your clinical skills as well as your team and management. Since you are not alone right out of the gate, thrown onto the floor, you have people there to help you before you make mistakes. One of the biggest challenge facing the nursing community is the nationwide shortage of nurses. Study shows that 24% of NGRNs resign by their second year into clinical experience because they feel way underprepared to enter the workforce (Trepanier, Early, Ulrich and Cherry, 2008, p. 209). This in turn, allows baby nurses to feel more confident in their abilities, less afraid to speak up with any concerns and cause a decrease overall in hospital nurse turnover rate.

With more confident, clinically sound nurses you find those more willing to step up into leadership positions. Letourneau, R. and Fater, K. (2015), made a point of stating that new graduate nurses that went through the program reported higher job satisfaction, demonstrated a higher level of quality of care and improved their skills in decision making (p. 97).

They have the necessary skills to multi-task, delegate and socialize with ease. The article by Brown and Crookes (2016) identify a list of ‘necessary skills’ taking in a survey all across Australia via people in all walks of the healthcare profession including managers, clinicians, academia, deans of nursing school and chief nursing officers. The top skills found to be lacking in those new graduate nurses not in transitional programs were leadership, communication and collaboration. All of these skills are nurtured in residency programs. Nurses who go through these programs are more likely to inspire those around them to work together and do better, provide better for their patients.
