Description: Anatolian rug handmade using a flat weaving technique. It is made entirely from wool, and is approximately 100 years old. Kilim designs often depict important cultural symbols, talismans or honor rites of passage. The inner portion of the rug contains 18 stars (yildiz) which signify happiness. The stars are commonly recognised as 'Solomon's seal' although the symbol has been used as a sign of fertility since the time of the Phrygians. The 'Z' shaped symbols are known as 'the hook' (cengel), it implies marriage and similarly to the nazar amulets it is believed to repel the evil eye. Wavy lines at the top and bottom of the rug represents flowing water (su yolu). Some of the other symbols featured on the rug include the snake (yilan), which is linked to creation myths and is another talisman for fertility and happiness.
