This has happened outside of my classroom, as well as inside the Class Connects. I had to slow down the assignments due so we basically do one every two days (for it to be due) otherwise the students do not pass it the first time and need to re do it anyways. Also, I have a few students who text me in the evening because they are still working. I have set up a 4 oclock and done policy, where they MUST put their pencils and workbooks down at 4 and be done for the day. I don't know how many of them follow that, but at least they say they do ;).
A new one, which just appeared today, is my students who understand everything, do wonderfully well in CC, and then go fail quizzes. We have begun the Speedy Sam process. They have to stop themselves and think: am I being Speedy Sam (I don't know why Sam, just because S... S...)? Do I need to finish quickly, or well? If I don't have time, can I do this tomorrow at a slower pace? We just began this today, so I cannot report on progress yet, but I think, if we keep at it, progress will be there!
- Alex Semyanko, 6th grade ;)

I sat down with both, in person at community day. Turns out that it was taking all day because the student was constantly taking huge breaks. We worked together to create a plan, catch up on work, and implement a reward system!

A few weeks ago in Homeroom, we talked about managing our time. I showed them how to put times on their Weekly Planner, so that they could become accountable for their daily assignments. For example, wake up at 7, language Arts from 8-9, Live Session 9-9:30, Math from 10-11, etc. I also recommended a timer on their phone to get them to class on time.
I also held my Quarter 1 Conferences before the quarter ended, so the LCs and students knew exactly what my expectations were for progress report cards. Sure, I got a whole bunch of assignments at the last minute, but it is better than failing them.
Angela Hunter, Grade 8

As we all know, we receive many excuses from policy breakers - - from Technical Issues to feeling lost in the Online School, not understanding the lessons. etc. Along the lines of our new Student Engagement Support Steps and with a smaller class size this year, I am happy to be devoting more time to making those phone calls and setting up those individual class connect sessions that undermine the excuses and hold families accountable. Through the phone conversations and class connects, I am realizing common areas of misunderstanding while making it clear that this is a real school. No child is going to be left behind. If I project this message one on one consistently, it will no longer be possible for students and their Learning Coaches to hide from their legal and academic responsibility while creating a looming dark cloud of their school experience. Nope, not in my class! I will chase them down and care for them along the way! :) LOL!

I have several policy breakers this year and I have found that one of the best ways to reach them is to call weekly, email daily for attendance, and schedule 1:1 blackboard sessions weekly. By following compliancy guidelines I can get a fast grip on which students need FAST referrals, which ones just need additional class time, and which ones continue to be compliance issues. It is a balancing act for sure but I think that the tide is slowly turning for those who do not choose to do their work! -Lydia Castagna, 8th grade

Today in Homeroom, we had an opportunity for students to share tips and tricks that worked for them, and for everyone to write quarter 2 goals on the whiteboard. The tips they shared were great (things like setting a timer to work for a specific amount of time, then taking a timed break). I took a screenshot of their goals to share out later when momentum and engagement are not as strong.
Kayla Montoya

I send out a Friday Update that focuses on what the main objective is in each course as well as reviewing were to find the needed documents to complete offline work. I review this again in Homeroom. The grades are starting reflect their knowledge of platform. I have started to open Dropboxes for extra credit for smaller assignments. This ensures that students are working through the entire curriculum and not passing it by because we don't require it. Struggling students are taking advance of it to raise their grades. Students love to see the grade move the needle!
Janine Burns, 7th Grade

I have had to send letters and make calls to get a hold of two of them who disregarded the emails. I was able to be understanding since I have teenagers and my 8th grader is not always honest.
I let the students know that I am here to support them and get them back on track. I had to start work contracts and have them just focus on the weekly plan ahead of them. I know they will be too overwhelmed if they have to make it all up.
