De Bono's Six Thinking Hats

The issue concerning men's health can be observed from many angles. The 'Thinking Hats' proposed by De Bono provide 6 possible angles that could be considered.

The White Hat: There are many successful products that have a similar target audience to what I am looking to promote such as Joking Hazard. This shows that my target demographic are willing to purchase products that appeal to their sense of humour. There are issue though as Joking Hazard is a card game while my hammer is at best can be used as a conversation starter. Hence, I am unsure if my product will produce the same impact to my target audience but it is possible to find out through surveying my audience. I need to find out how many people are likely to buy products such as Joking Hazard, can they start conversation with strangers in a casual setting and do they have issue maintaining that conversation.

The Black Hat: It should be noted that Joking Hazard marketed itself as a card game to play with friends while my product is more simple as it is a hammer that can help start a conversation, through jokes. This is a possible weakness to my product as its simplistic design could affect the potential appeal it can have on my audience. Another issue is the possible jokes or topics should be added into the hammer. Although my main audience are adults, it is possible that it would also be exposed to children.

The Green Hat: The design I have in mind for the "Icebreaker" is a design similar to a children toy hammer, a yellow handle with a red hammer head. There is a speaker on one end of the hammer and a switch between 2 modes on the other end. The hammer's speaker contains around 60 jokes and 40 topics, ranging in a variety of fields to help diversify the conversation.

The Yellow Hat: The "Icebreaker" is intended to be a fun way to help start conversation between people in an informal setting.

The Red Hat: The "Icebreaker" is a tool that tries to appeal to people's sense of humour.

The Blue Hat: The commercial's goal is to sell my product, the "Icebreaker" toy hammer. The current goal requires me to complete the journal stating my intentions and preparations for the commercial.

The commercial opens focusing on three friends sitting on a couch, blankly staring at a television screen with no sound other than the monotonous sounds from the television. The three remains still for a while until one snaps out and look around. Seeing the others still blankly staring, he enters a thinking pose then brighten ups and pulls out the "Icebreaker" hammer. He lightly use the hammer to hit a table in front of him. The hammer then plays a joke: "Why do we spell 'Dark' with a 'k' instead of a 'c'. Because you can't 'c' in the dark". Upbeat music should start to play in the background. The other friends give some small chuckles. He use the hammer a couple more time until his friends start laughing. He use the hammer another time but he turn the switch at the other end of the hammer head. This time, the hammer says out a topic instead of a joke (e.g.: The use of dogs in helping wild animals be more social, etc.). The friends then engage in lively conversation. Finally, the commercial shows the "Icebreaker" in full view and the brand names before ending.

'Toys' are usually associated with a younger audience but as can be seen by the success of similar products such as Joking Hazard, this association is not absolute. It is important that my advertisement should be reflective of the product I want to sell. I want my video to have an overall cheerful tone. Considering the treatment that I have, the start of the advertisement is bland and boring and it should start changing tone the moment the product is brought up, becoming upbeat and fun.

The message that I have chosen for my assignment is a commercial spot for "The Icebreaker", a fictitious toy hammer that when it is moved quickly, like the act of 'hammering', it would then output a random joke from an internal speaker. This would be accomplished in the video by using editing software to simulate it. The jokes would "break the ice" and help people ease into conversation. An additional idea that I have is to have a switch allowing it to have two mode: Joke Mode and Topic Mode. Topic Mode allows the Icebreaker to suggest a topic to talk instead of a joke.

My main target audience would be for young adults, in the age range of 18-20. The jokes would not be too foul but likely inappropriate for teenagers and kids but an older audience would also be possible. The targeted age range was chosen as they are possibly group with a good disposable income and are more susceptible for 'frivolous purchases'. However, the tool was conceptualized as a way to help introvert people open up to informal conversation with others. Introvertedness has many benefits but in today's market where good networking capability is almost essential in career-finding, the capability to even make small talks are quintessential.
