Grand Final Night. Portugal vs France. Millions of people watching from all around the world. According to the World Soccer Talk website the figure was 4,536,000 million people. Within the first 24 minutes of the biggest game in his life, the famous Portuguese captain was injured and left the field in a dramatic exit that has sparked memes all over the world. This Padlet includes the pictures of the injured captain who became the star player when his team won the Euro World Cup - without him playing on the field. Cristiano Ronaldo was a ordinary example of how sport is a metaphor for masculinity however it was the injury, the exit off the field, the side coaching, and the tearing the shirt off at the end ( for no apparent reason) that I want to emphasise as how the masculine body can communicate power to motivate a team to win against the odds . The team captain was communicating the entire game through his body, keeping him as a central focus on the media and able to play a part of leading the team to victory even though he only played approx 20 minutes of the 120 total minutes of the game. At first his injury left him sitting on the field. He attempted to play again but couldn't continue. His sombre physical disposition communicated to his fans that he was trying and how hard it was for him to leave the game. On his last failed attempt he received an honouring applause from the Portuguese fans who could see he had tried his best to play for his country but clearly could not. Ronaldo continued to lead the team from the side lines alongside the coach. When the team scored a goal against France sealing their victory for the world cup - Ronaldo took his shirt off for no apparent reason and kept it off until the trophy presentation. He eventually put the uniform back on and was distinguished as the team captain. Ronaldo communicates through his body. He uses his body to communicate to his fans and this is what individualises him from the team and gives him world wide influence and attention. The injury, the staying on the field in tears, the demonstrated exchange of power to the man who will play in his place,  taking on the role of motivator on the sideline, to the taking off the shirt in triumph. All of this created a dramatic storyline that lead the fans on an emotional rollar coaster from defeat to victory.
