MODELING OUR LEARNING- USING UDL & BLENDED LEARNING TO ADJUST TO SNOW DAYS! Thanks to the learning from our book study, when schools closed due to weather on Jan 23, we were able to seamlessly transition our plans for our first meeting! Modeling UDL and Blended Learning strategies from our book, like choice boards and online discussions, we shifted plans and allowed everyone to enjoy the day and still participate in the ways that met their personal and professional learning needs!

Newcomer Support at Saline International Night

Saline Area Schools held its International Family Night in January and the WISD NC was present for the celebration! The event was well attended by families who brought delicious meals to the potluck and community organizations pitched in with goodie bags full of books and treats.

Supporting the first days of school visits are critical for immigrant and refugee families new to the country, especially in the winter!

WISD collaborated with Jewish Family Services to "shop" for winter gear for all the children in a newly arrived Afghan family so they can start the school year warm and with their swanky new school supplies. Later, we were present to welcome dad for a school tour so he could connect to the space where his children would spend most of their day.

Newcomer Site Visit to YCS NC Center

Magic happens in Ford Elementary's Newcomer Center. The WISD was able to see newly arrived Kindergarten and 1st grade students move with ease for breakfast and morning meeting routines, help each other find materials and use their best leader voice to practice going through the daily schedule before they worked on compound words and syllables!

Our SIOP Two Day Institute on 1/25 and 1/26 had representation from AAPS, Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester, Saline, and YCS! Several teachers were unable to attend due to the snowy weather, we're considering offering a third session for the spring. We'll keep you posted!

Newcomer Educator Network January AI Session

In January, NEN welcomed Khalil El-Saghir to share all that's new and exciting in the world of AI tools, and how to leverage them to make content meaningful and comprehensible for newcomers. Khalil took us through a workshop experience using ChatGPT to created modified texts for different WIDA proficiency levels that keep the outcome of the assignment but provide just the right supports to students.
