Key Vocab Regarding Government Intervention

Indirect Tax: A tax imposed on goods and services rather than directly on income or profits. Examples include value-added tax (VAT), sales tax, and excise duties. The tax burden can be passed on to consumers by businesses through higher prices.

Tariff: A tax or duty imposed on imported goods. Tariffs are used to protect domestic industries from foreign competition by making imported goods more expensive or to generate revenue for the government.

Quotas: A limit on the quantity of a good that can be imported or produced. Quotas are used to restrict supply, protect domestic industries, or influence trade balances by controlling the amount of foreign goods entering a country.

Subsidies: Financial assistance provided by the government to individuals, businesses, or industries to reduce the cost of production or consumption of goods and services. Subsidies can encourage production, support certain sectors, and make products more affordable for consumers.

Price Floors: A government-imposed minimum price for a good or service, set above the equilibrium price to prevent prices from falling too low. An example is minimum wage laws. Price floors can lead to surpluses if the price is set too high.

Price Ceilings: A government-imposed maximum price for a good or service, set below the equilibrium price to prevent prices from rising too high. Examples include rent control. Price ceilings can lead to shortages if the price is set too low.

Direct Provision of Services: When the government directly supplies services to the public, such as healthcare, education, or public transportation, rather than relying on the private sector. This is typically done to ensure accessibility, affordability, and equity in the provision of essential services.

Merit Goods: Goods and Services that are considered benefical according to the Government(Example:Education and Health Care)

Demerit Goods: Goods and Services that are considered to be harmful for the public(Example: Cigarettes and fatty foods)

Market Failure: Failure of the market to reach allocative efficiency
